I agree with everything described in this course, a professional instructor needs to cover all the bases. Some are manner of speaking, dress, demeanor, teaching style, level of expertise, all aspects of class management, etc. Also, students need to perceive you as a good role model not just in the classroom, but in the field that they are aiming for.

Hi Suzanne,
Well said. This type of professionalism shows your students that you are a dedicated educator that cares about student success.
Gary

Hi Angie,
Good definition. This says a lot about how you are going to approach the classroom and your students. Keep up the good work.
Gary

Based on this module, instructional professionalism is the ability to plan instructionally, deliver content and assess student learning.

Instructional professionalism is projecting myself with confidence, engaging the students with my personality, and being able to change methods of teaching eg small group discussions, demonstrations depending on the setting.

My definition of instructional professionalism is having an great understanding of what you are teaching, your developer of the subject matter, and guiding the students through successfully learning the content.

I agree. How course content is presented has a huge connection to professionalism. The instructor was speak, interact, and dress apprporiately. Professional dress attire varies for different careers. The way instuction is delivered varies from one career path to the next.

To me, instructional professionalism starts way before I even enter the classroom:
Becoming familiar with the names on the roster, making sure I have the necessary supplies, making sure the classroom is adequate, knowing the material, having a lesson plan for presentation, and showing my students that I am organized, knowledgeable in the subject, and very excited to be their instructor.

Hi Kathleen,
Right on in relation to coming into the class ready to teach. This is the way a professional educator presents him or herself to students.
Gary

To me this means be well-prepared before each class. Arriving with all the materials you need to successfully instruct the class. From start to finish of the class you set the tone and demonstrate your involvement with teaching.
I've seen teachers arrive late, forget their books, not have anything prepared and it shows the students a complete lack of commitment.

I agree 100%. The Instructor is a role model. The students look to Instructors for more then book knowledge, they also want relevence to the field. First impressions really do matter and are lasting impressions. Instructors who look and act professional are more likely to have students act the same way.

Hi Sandra,
Right you are. This is what being a professional educator should be about.
Gary

Hi Darlisa,
Well said. This is what helps to "connect the dots" for students between the classroom and the real world. We may be the first professional they have encountered in their field so we are setting the standard for how a person show be for that career. A big responsibility we need to always keep in mind.
Gary

Being able to conduct the classroom with organizational structure, professional appearance, knowledge and mutual respect for student and teacher.

By epitomizing all that makes one a professional. Arriving on time, prepared for the tasks at hand but also by exuding the proper attitude. We teach our students the subject matter but we must also enstill the value of having the proper work ethic and demeanor.

I'm in full agreement with you. I feel that instructors should represent themselves in the same light that they'd hope the students are aspiring to be in. Professionalism is contagious. Students view instructors as leaders and they do have an expectation.

To me instructional professionalism is being at the fore front of knowledge in medicine. Also, always being prepared for classes that I teach. I always wear scrubs to teach my students so they can see what a health care professional looks like. I choose my words wisely and treat all students with the same respect that I demand.

Present yourself to the students in a manner that clearly identifies your expectations of them. Start class on time, dress appropriately, respect your class, and always offer encouragement to your students.

Hi Sharon,
Good definition. This is what learning is suppose to be about. The students need to have the skills to make application to what they have learned in real world settings.
Gary

Mastery of content taught is key. You must know what you are teaching. Student can see very quickly when you are winging it. Presenting yourself as a role model, by speech, dress, preparedness, effectiveness of time and by all means personal communication.
