My first class

Next month I will begin teaching the first course for a new class and I have been brainstorming all the things I want to say and do before beginning the first lecture with my first beginning group.
In no particular order:
Distribute the syllabus
Discuss the learning objectives and my expectations
Emphasize and describe professional conduct
Explore the textbook
Relate the story of my career
Reinforce their career choice
Discuss professional organizations
Encourage open discussion

I have them twice a week for five hours each day. Any other suggestions would be helpful

Dr. Carlton,
Good way to map out the learning sequence that you are going to follow. This reduces as you know student confusion and keeps the course progressing.
Gary

Thank you for the suggestion. I would also add that I hand out printed material that I think they may want to refer to as time goes by, specifically websites of professional organizations so they see what ongoing activities are available.

On the first day of class, I use a Powerpoint presentation to help with the flow of information that is given to the students. It is more like a check-list and ensures that I cover all of the items for the first day.

Hi William,

Just be careful with stories of your previous work experience. It can detract from what your bottom line is when teaching. Basically, make sure it has to do with the subject at hand and goes along with your objective.

Esther,
Good planning on how to start a new course. You have planned for and touch all of the critical elements needed to get the students settled in and ready to learn. I think you are going to do very well as an instructor. Welcome to the profession.
Gary

I totally understand how you feel as I am in the same boat. I begin my first clinical rotation in about two weeks and find myself getting anxious. Currently it is the IT faculty duties and access that is stressing me out. I plan on similar activities as yours such as:

Have them share where they are in the nursing program and what brought them here.
Their personal goals.
Provide the syllabus and review it.
Review my class expectations as far as professionalism, behavior, respect, safety of patients, punctuality, abscenses, etc.
Tell them a little about myself and my journey here.
Tour them through the facility.
Welcome them to the rest of their life!
Let them know I am here to support their learning and nothing would give me more pleasure than for them to succeed.

William,
You are right on target with how you want to start the course. If possible I would add some examples along with your comments in relation to such things as professional conduct so you make it a fun and humorous introduction to the course. This will help to get them engaged and focused on the what is to come their way.
