I believe in student centered learning, positive reinforcement and student motivation. Teacher command on the subject is no doubt mandatory, but the way you explain your point to the student is critical.

know your past and know yourself

I have used the "Two-Truths and a Fib" also. The more outgoing students offer to respond first, and the activity is fun enough to engage even the quieter students.

I tailor my style of lecture delivery to the course. When I am teaching a class like Student Success, we can have a much less formal dynamic within the classroom, than we can with a course like Dental Anatomy.

I find video clips to be a very useful addition to classroom lectures also. Most of my students are very used to technology and they often seek material online,on their own. By adding my own selections to the lectures I can keep them focused on the concepts and information which meets the objectives of the course.

I use a lot of team building exercises, games and incorporate those with other learning methods.

making out acronyms from names things and places that are familiar. telling them stories they can relate to and then substituting for content being taught

I use a variety of techniques when teaching. I like to use power point presentations with pictures and videos. I also like to have several hands on activities for kinesthetic learners.

Being prepared for class is very important because it shows that you are organized and prepared to deliver your lecture.

Lori,
The key is to be a professional that students can look up to and respect because that individual models the standards of the field while moving their learning forward. Good points, thanks for sharing them with us.

I try to utilize a variety of styles within the classroom. Students learn differently ( ie: visual learner, auditory learner, etc.). My hope with this technique is that all of the students will feel as though they have learned something. When students feel that they are able to learn from you, then they are often less intimidated or even bothered by your personality. They realize that you are working hard to teach them; and in the end, that is the goal of the education experience. It will also allow them to have respect for you, even when they may not "like you". I've worked with educators who are very well liked by their students (personality wise- the instructor was "nice"), but even the students admit that they didn't learn from that instructor as well as they learned from me.

By viewing the approach of other instructors, provides me with additional insight for providing instruction.

Jennifer,
Good strategy with a high degree of information being received with a low pressure level for the students. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hello everyone,

The techniques that I use in class that I have found to be helpful are polling questions and giving students a chance to reflect on their relevant experiences with the subject matter that is being taught. Through polling questions, students are able to answer without identifying themselves, so they are honest in their responses. The sharing of experiences helps other students to see that they are not alone in the subject or a certain situation.

Jennifer

Vicki,
In whats ways to you see this happening? Thanks for your input on this.

Online instruction and observation of other instructors helps me to improve my instruction style.

Jon,
Good strategies for professional development. It is an ongoing process that we are all involved in if we are dedicated to our students and effective instructional delivery.

each quarter students are asked to complete a student survey where they are able to assess the class as well as the instructor. From this I am able to see areas where I need to improve. I also complete an action plan with my supervisor wherein I plan changes that will make me more effective.
