Do you have any recommendations regarding handling disruptive behavior in class?

My idea of good professionalism in the workplace would include being on time and dressing and looking professional. The classroom should be an enviornment where everyone feels comfortable speaking. I act speak to the students in a professional manner, the same way I would speak to them if we were working in the field together.

Bobbie,
Examples, field trips and guest speakers from the field. The more you can make a connection between their career choice and their courses the greater enthusiasm will be.

What is the best to get students excited about their field or career choice.

David,
Well said and right on point. This is what we need to reflect and model in all that we do as educators. Thank you for sharing these comments with us as I know they will be valuable to instructors that are just starting their careers.

To me, this means exemplifying the qualities that a client or customer would want to see in the person representing your company or institution.

In my case, I represent my college, and so I must be punctual, organized, and looking my best. This also means speaking in a clear, confident manner. Finally, the care I put into my work reflects on my institution, and so I must strive for perfection in this area.

When the student sees this behavior, it engages their own capacity to show these qualities, and so they become acclimated to it in the context of the professional setting. It also builds report.

Courtney,
You have a very global perspective on how you want to approach the classroom. I think you are going to do well as a teacher. Bring your personality into the classroom and enjoy the interaction you have with your students and the result will be effective learning plus great interaction with students.
I wish you much teaching success.

Being new to the educational feild this is a very important concept for me to understand. I think that well planned educational content, the ability to clearly deliver the content in a "user friendly" way, use of pertinent jargon, and receiving feedback from students and appropriately acting it comprise important aspects of instructional prefessionalism.

Being on time, which means before the start time of the class. Being prepared, have all supplies needed, etc. You need to practice what you preach, walk the walk and talk the talk! Setting a good example goes a long way with students both in the classroom and intheir future workplace.

Tiana,
Many students are in need of a role model for their career development. We need to remember this and always conduct, dress and react in a professional manner.

Instructional professionalism is shown when the instructor prepares ahead, delivers the content in a clear and appropiate form depending on the learning skills of the students

Instructional Professionalism:

Professionalism encompasses many things. The ability to plan, deliver, and reflect on educational content is of upmost importance.
Tapping into the "Model" role, professionalism also means presenting a clear image or model of what someone in your field should be. How you dress, act, and speak are all things that the students will look at and potentially mimic.

Instructional professionalism is to lead by example and to have and exude the confidence needed to enter in a professional career in my field. When I walk to the front of the classroom my students will have me as the example of what is expected. I have been taught this throughout my career and is a passion of mine.

Setting a good example for what will be exspected of your students in the field.

Being a role model to your students is so important. You might be one of the students first glances at the way professional moves in the industry they are studying. It is important to be proficient in you topic, exude passion and energy about what you do for a living, bring a professional level of instruction techniques and protocols to the classroom, and be a good listener to your students questions and needs.

Kathy

PS: I particularly got a lot out of one of the videos where he talked about not trying to prove that you know your topic and are well credentialed to be teaching. It is a good reminder in humility. After all, if you can't figure out how to transfer and share the knowledge and skills that you hold, you are useless as an instructor.

I define my instructional professionalism by making sure all the information i give to my students gives them the clear understanding of what I'm asking of them as a student.

Jamie,
So important and so true.

It is important that you remain professional at all times. This is how you will earn the respect of your students. This starts from the first day of class and should continue throughout..
