David,
Well said and as you work in educational preparation like myself I am sure you are challenged at times when it comes to the lack of professionalism displayed by some faculty. These are the instructors that can't understand why the students don't respect them and have student management issues in their classes. Thanks for your good points.

it's all about ethics, integrity, fair judgement and self awarness and how well you use that to deliver a message

Hi Dr. Meers,
Professionalism is a big focus in our career college where I serve as the Dean of Faculty. We work to set the example for our students so they learn the importance of presenting themselves professionally in the workplace.

Instructional professionalism, I believe, is a big part of this effort. When we are in front of students, they are looking to us as the example of how to behave. Our instruction should be professionally organized and presented. Everything we do is scrutinized by or students. If we do not present our instruction and ourselves in a professional manner, we should not expect our students to act any differently.

Dr. David A. Scott, Ed.D.

Benjamin,
Well said. This is what being an effective instructor needs to be about.

A professional educator must recognize that the facilitation of learning is of the utmost importance. After all, teaching is the trade, and learning is what the students are after. This requires the instructor to maintain a friendly, approachable demeanor, a clean and neat personal appearance, and intimate knowledge of the subject matter.

Being on time, having your lesson plan ready, copies made, etc. If you aren't sure when they ask a question, admit and look it up and get back to them, don't blow them off.

Instructional professionalism is the tools and methods used to relay knowledge and instruction so others can learn.

Instructional professionalism is how I represent myself to my students and to my colleagues. Although I consider my knowledge of content material to be important, how I conduct myself is a greater measure of professionalism. Am I organized and prepared? Am I respectful? Do I treat my students fairly? Do I participate in professional development whenever possible? These are all important components of instructional professionalism.

Acting professionally means showing respect to those around you. No matter what your level of expertise is on a subject, always allow others to contribute. Never treat people as if they are insignificant or unworthy. Always maintain your highest level of integrity. Remember that your body language speaks louder than your words. Consider how your actions will affect not only the outcome, but the journey. You must also hold true to your standards and hold your standards high. Be willing to take that extra step and show a little pride in your work.

Jay,
Appropriate dress and conduct that reinforces the career field is important along with what you have already listed.

Instructional professionalism involves organization and class preparation, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the subject. As a role model for our students, an instructor must speak, dress and present themselves professionally.

To present and deliver information in a clear articulate and organized fashion that is reflective of professional competency and your area of expertise.

Instructional professionalism is demonstrating one's knowledge in the content area and successfully being able to help transfer knowledge to learners. Also, it consists of communicating with students in a timely fashion along with providing substantive feedback in their assignments. What other aspects would you consider make-up instructional professionalism?

Jay

Guy,
I agree with you about the good feeling you get when you know you have "nailed" a lesson and that all of your students were engaged. It is what keeps you coming back day after day as a teacher.

Being able to meet the needs of all the students as individuals. Everyone brings differant levels of education and learning capabilities. I feel my best when all of my class is on the same wave length and learning as a group successfully.

Guy,
This a very direct definition that provides support and direction to the learning process for your students.
