Sheila,
Thank you for sharing how you adjust your instructional style to fit the setting. This way you can reach each student based upon the type of instructional delivery being used. As you mention lab classes are different from more formal lecture classes and how you interact with students.

Gary,
This is what helps to "sell" the course to the students because they know you are excited about what you are sharing with them.

Terry,
I am with you on arriving early and getting settled in. By the time class is ready to start I am ready to enjoy sharing with my students. Class goes so much better for everyone with preparation and early arrival.

Instructional strategies should be driven by the learning styles of the students. With experience, instructors develop a plethora of strategies to target students' needs which in turns improves the quality of instruction.
Currently I am a new instructor and taking these online workshops and engage in these forums helps to see what areas I will need to consistently work and expand on. There I a lot of useful information in these forums and I am looking forward to getting advice and useful tips from all of the more experienced instructors.
i can talk a little more to the class and take more time when i explain my demo's or make sure i ask them question as im explaining to them the welding procedure to make sure they are getting a great understanding of what is on task at that.and also maybe do a few lesson plans the night before so i can ready for my class and any questions they might have.
Currently I am taking these courses through CEE, however,in a few months, as a member, I will be participating in a Professional Development lecture/hands-on Diabetes Seminar by our local ANA organization. Also, when I attend CEU's & inservices I study other instuctors/presenters for their different styles, methods, creativity, and effectiveness that would best enhance my own.
I believe all professionals must make a commitment to actively participate in "life-Long" learning and utilize as many resourses available to do so. I am takeing these Instructor Development courses as my current resource now.Taking courses like these as well as seminars, continueing education units, etc. signifigantly helped me to be very adaptive in my Instrucional styles depending on the types of courses I am teaching. For larger Forum classes I tend to be more formal in conduct & presentation BUT also strive to be interesting also, by using audio-visual aids as often as possible as well as examples and/or demonstrations. In smaller groups or Skills Lab groups I tend to be more personable & interactive, with students free to ask questions or commwents during as well as after class. Also, I often tend to encourage comments, fedback, and return demonstrations by the students, mostly to assess every student is making good progress.
My instructional style is always inline with the institutional setting style that is given to me . On the other hand, I reinforce it with some styles that I have seen and experienced from mentors giving lectures and demonstrations during seminars, conventions and trainings. I adapt some new innovations that I feel very effective as an instructor.

I use high energy and engage students on a level that motivates the student.
I have that by arriving at least an hour early , I have time to check my e-mails, grab something to eat,to review my course content, get a feel for how long it will take, make notes, a check -list so I dont overlook important items, etc .... I feel so much more relaxed. This in turn makes my thoughts more organized and I can focus better on the needs of my group. When I compare the days of being very well prepped to getting there "on-time" , I feel as tho things just flow better.
Being more relaxed allows puts me and the class at ease , which translates to a better learning environment.

As an instructor that has no formal education in education it has been a trial and error journey. Access to learning opportunities such as these courses gives me that chance to learn about how to educate.
Lennox,
Good point and something that instructors need to consider each time they prepare for class. Appealing to the different learning preferences of students is how engagement is going to occur.

There are many ways in which you one can improve their style of delivering information. Learning and seeing how you class in learning and then cater you style to the class so that you can deliver the material to them.
Making sure that I understand all my students learning styles. With that I can keep there motivation going.
