I agree. We tend to teach how we want to be taught. I usually ask myself, "How would I like to hear this information?" when developing my style.
Obtaining unbiased feedback from the students about how my style influenced them is key. That way I am able to grow in a way that most benefits the students.
I always try to keep my students engaged by presenting the same material in differnt formats, at least one of which may involve some kind of independent work by the student. I also identify the concepts the students may have a difficult time understanding and see if there is a better way it can be presented
Dawnyell,
So true and so important. As instructors we signed on for life long learning if we are to stay current and at the top of our game professionally.

Tina,
The use of case studies and scenarios enhance the value of course content. The more we can show application and relevancy with the content the more they will be engaged. So keep using these strategies as you focus your students on the use of the course content.

Catina,
The more integration of the senses and cognitive processing the greater success you are going to have with the students. You make a very good point about how we can do this in your instructional planning.

I oftrn tell my students, tHAt if we ever stop learning, it is time to stop working in our field. I think the same can be said about instructors.
This was in 1980 and at a major university. I bet the guy was tenured.
I like to be diverse in my teaching because not all students are didactic learners, power point learners,or visual retainers. I have applied more hands on,real life scenarios in my teaching techniques and it has proven to be effective and retain students longer!

I'm curious...what college was this and what year? I'm assuming it was a very long time ago because I cannot imagine anyone waiving a gun at a school in today's world.
Techniques that I will employ to further develop and enhance my instructional style is to continue taking CE courses like this one. Here is where you can learn various techniques & tips, and communicate with other instructors.
Researching and implementing new subject-related activities can also enhance my instructional style. Today's students really enjoy "hands-on" learning.
Your bring up a great point about learning from students Katherine! In today's world, many adult students are extremely knowledgeable and can bring valuable expertise to a classroom.
You always have to be on top of the latest facts ,equipment and teaching strategies in your feeld
Robert,
Good way to a practical experience such as driving to and from work as a way to illustrate your approach to teaching and instructional delivery. You are getting to the same destination but you are taking a number of different routes to get there. As a result you are keeping your students engaged and focused on the content.

I like to use a creative aproach. It's almost like driving home from work using a different route everyday. I like to come up with activities that will keep the interest of my students. I always remember my own teachers that made class fun and easy to understand.
Lyle,
I find this is beneficial to me as well. Gives me another perspective.

Seth,
What are some strategies you can share with us that helps you stay current and provide real world situations to your students?

I like to co-teach, it helps me to see other instructors style.
My favorite college professor walked in the lecture hall, kicked over a podium, waved around a gun and told all 500 of us to get out now.
No one left and he laughed and began his first class session. He was strict. The doors were locked when the bell rang. He would not speak while others were speaking. But from the moment he put on his little show he never lost our attention nor his composure.
I think the gun was a fake.
Keep up to date on current topics. Try to relate the topic to a real world situation.
