Supplemental Materials

I am curious to find out what kinds of supplemental materials instructors have developed or acquired for their courses.

I ask student to find related marerials to share in class and how it relates to what we are learning.

Hi Erica,
Good point about the youtube videos. I find the hardest part is keeping up with and selecting those I want to use in my classes. I do know they greatly expand the opportunities of exposure for my students.

I've been surprised and impressed with the variety and quality of youtube video clips that add to my class content. I've used them, for example, to show the history of a company we were studying, and to show humorous clips from tv shows that illustrate important questions or issues that we then discuss. Be sure to preview any youtube clip start to finish before using it! You could have unpleasant surprises with inappropriate content.

Depending on the class I am teaching at the time I try to utilize supplemental materials such as trade/professional magazines, websites, field trips, guest speakers, DVD's, and webinars. It is good to bring in the latest information on a subject because at times the texts provided for the class is not up to date.

I too have brought in guest speakers which I find can be very inspiring for the students and I always receive positive feedback from the class. I also like to supplement their course materials with current news articles because I feel it keeps the student's more interested in the material and it keeps them up on current trends in the industry.

Students seem to like to see examples of materials that are used in the field. For example - trade/professional magazines that instructors or the library subscribe to that are useful to people working in the field that they are studying.

Also, in classes where students are required to use a certain type of source for a class (like scholarly or trade - or primary/secondary in legal courses), then it's useful to provide examples.

I bring in examples of materials. Particularly if they are learning about the materials. I also bring in guest speakers. Many times I will have them read a magazine article and write an essay about what they read.
