I agree with your response Joyce. A well prepared syllabus also students to manage their time effectively. Adult student are juggling home, work, and school responsibilities. The syllabus allows them to work ahead and stay abreast of the assignments, reading requirements, and homework.
It is the operating manual for the course. Without it both the students and the instructor would be lost. It is like following a map so everyone involved know what is coming up next.

It helps the student to understand the expectations of the instructor.
Helps them to understand the policies of the college.
Helps them to understand the important dates during the semester.
Course objectives are made clear to the students.
In a nut shell, it helps the students to succeed in the class.
In taking this section of this course it gave me a better way of preparing my syllabus. Almost like a blue print where your not putting too much information but your covering what you need to make the course for you as well as the student flow better.

I totally agree about the frustrations and misunderstandings. With a well written syllabus, much time is saved on the instructors part. The more detailed the syllabus, the better!
The information supplied in the syllabus informs the student of tests dates, homework dates, what's expected of the student if a class is missed, and when a make-up exam can be taken. I feel it's a vital part of the class. I don't know what I'd do without having a syllabus to follow.
