A learning environment sets the stage for learning. If the area is non-conducive, it acts as a barrier for learning. With all the impediments that students face in obtainng an education, the classrrom must not be incldued as a barrier to learning.
It can't be any better when making the environment friendly to students
Wes,
So true. Without this equipment and the ability to demonstrate to the students how to use such equipment the course will quickly fade into a loss for the students. Their excitement is based upon being able to use such equipment to enhance their skill sets.

I teach advanced audio production. It is crucial to have the necessary equipment for "hands on" in-class experience thus, fostering a much better learning environment for instruction.
The learning environment communicate inclusivity promoting professional learning communities for student to participate in a safe space that allows for critical reflection and a ability to better interactive with other students.
Garland,
I use guest speakers and field trips in my classes for the reasons you list. They are both great ways to get students engaged and motivated about what is being presented. They increase the value of the course for the students.

I think that including these two elements in teaching your students are so crucial. I've been doing it for over six years now and most of the students are always excited about it. It shows them hands on what they are learning and how these two event assignments can actually relate to their career. First, the field trip is a visual experience in seeing exactly how everything connects and works. This is as good as it can get. Secondly, having a guest speaker simply gives them just another true professional voice with real experience from the field. Overall, it only contributes to the cause of what knowledge they need to have in order to grow and pursue in their career.
Willie,
This is very important because you are right the students need to be able to feel comfortable and at ease if they are going to be able to focus on what is being covered.

I always strive to create a serious, yet relaxed and comfortable learning environment. If students are more at ease, they will feel less intimidated in the learning process.

Brenda,
Organization and preparation are two essentials needed for teaching and learning success. You have them outlined well in terms of getting students engaged from the beginning of class through the conclusion.

The learning environment should be setup appropriate for the class. Props, and other tools need to be supplied, so the students can see and feel the learning environment that they will be learning in. This will get the students excited and interested in the class.
Deidre,
Right you are in terms of making course content come alive and have value to students. Being able to observe the items, tools or procedures that are used in the field helps them to integrate this information into their working memories.

Not everything can be taught in a classroom, some things requires being outside or even in a museum setting, lots of people learn better when they are able to put what is being taught in action. Role plays are good depending on the topic that is being taught.
The learning environment allows the students to focus on the subject matter that can be delivered in any number of formats. If the learning environment is supportive of powerpoints, video and lab all at once, there is a greater impact on delivering material and understanding.
Ed,
As you consider the impact of the learning environment you can see how your learning environment compares to what the students see on their field trips. Comparing the two will help them see what environment the will be working in and what they are currently learning in. They can see how they will be called upon to work in different situations and use different resources to achieve the desired sounds.

I should think more about how the learning environment affects the students. I teach audio, surround sound and sound for picture.
We are in a small theater with an audio console and workstation, which is great, but I should be more aware of emphasizing the importance of the environment. From reading other posts I see that field trips to other facilities would be a good idea.
Judy,
We need to see our teaching environments through the eyes of our students. When we do we will know we have the environment right or we need to make changes that will make the setting comfortable and supportive.

The learning environment is extremely important to the learning process. Instruction should occur in a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning. Students should be provided with adequate support resources in order to effectively accomplish the course objectives.
Tone by the instructor and his or her relevance of the environment to the career area is the most important part of starting a class along with their credibility.
