The learning enviroment is very important in learning. It should involve differnet types of hands on projects, labs and lectures to help use the differnt types of learning processes.

Christina,
You have sound instructional strategies that you are using. As students are so varied I can appreciate the fact that it works with some and for others it doesn't. This is one of the challenges we educators have. No matter the situation though we need to always strive to present our professional best in a way that will engage students at some level.

I teach theory and the clinical portion to what is being taught, so it is very important to me that the learning environment both in the classroom and the clinical setting match which is sometimes hard to do. I try to use visual aid and videos in the classroom setting to help students understand the lecture (theory) portion. When we are in the hospital I try and get the students involved in what we have learned at school in the practical side. It sometimes work and sometimes does not work.

Angela,
This is a great idea because it helps the students to reflect on the resources that they have and how they will be used out in the field. Thanks for sharing this idea with us.

Angela,
Yes, they do. Stories from the field are what increase the value of the content for the students. They are the ROI in terms of what they are learning.

I have my students make a resource book to take with them to extern

students love real life experiences

Nicole,
I have a resource packet that I have developed for my course for the reason that you are developing one for your course. The packet lets me add or drop content based upon what is happening in the field each time I teach the course. This way I can use the textbook for foundational information and the resource packet for current content.

Planning and preparation are important to effective course delivery. Developing my own resource package so the material can be current may be an advantage. Students are seeking relevant experience and the institution promises industry-current faculty.

Nicole,
This is a great to make the content come alive and the reality of what they are learning becomes real. It is at this point they start to see themselves becoming of part of their career field.

The learning environment can improve concept development. Learning inside and outside the classroom can demonstrate tranferability of skills. For example, our study tour to Alaska exposes students to travel, new way of life, interpersonal skills, etc. Their personal and professional skills are enhanced beyond what is lectured or demonstrated in class.

James,
You are doing a good job as the learning leader for your students. You have everything laid out for them as well as a comfortable place to learn. This is how instructional planning should be.

In my case, as long as the room is not freezing, I can operate. A clean white board helps, but I can deal with that. The students can also operate with some place to sit that is not freezing. The important part is setting the environment so that everyone feels comfortable, emotionally. I assure them that I will not yell at anyone and that I will be in control of the room at all times. The students are free to move around at any time during classroom activities. I tell them that I get mad if they try to cheat. All in all I try to set up the room as a friendly place to be!

John,
This is why it is critical that the colleges keep everything up to date. They are educating individuals to enter into and be successful in their career areas so they need to have the latest content and equipment to do so.

Very important touching, feeling, seeing and doing work so much better than me telling you how it is

It is very important. The context of the classroom has a powerful effect on students.

If the computer lab, for instance, is using Microsoft Office 2007 (in the year 2014), the students tend to perceive the environment as inadequate and are less likely to apply themselves.

having a clear learning environment will allow the student to know what's expected and they will be clear on class, assignment, reading, grades, late work etc.

The role that the Learning environment plays in the instructional process is that if it is adequate to the needs of professionalism. It can be used as a add in the student learning.

David,
Thank you for this good point. With all of the factors that influence students success we instructors need to identify and use those over which we have control such as the learning environment. This then becomes one less distraction for the students as they strive to be successful in a course.
