Hi Julie,
Well said. This shows that you want to earn the respect of your students and you have worked hard in preparing for the class in order to do so.
Gary

Hi Karen,
Well said. Early and adequate planning is essential for teaching success. Without it the train is going to derail for sure.
Gary

Because it lets me have a better approach with my class and not lose the target.

Being prepared allows your students to know that you care enough to have spent time getting ready to teach the course and be ready to answer questions they may have.

There are many reasons why an instructor should plan early and comprehensively for a course. Among the reasons that I see as most important are that an instructor needs to ensure that they include everything required in the course outline, have all of the material they will need, and that they fully understand and can teach all of the required material.

So that the instructor is famililar with the lesson plan and has made a list of objectives they will follow to teach the course.

Early planning is important becasue you want to be fully prepared for class and be ready for whatever may come up. Most importantly you want your students to know that you are prepared and ready to teach. If you appear to be unorganized in front of your students it may take away some of your credibility.

To ensure materials presented are complete and accurate according to course description.

It provides both the students and the instructor a timeline so that students understand clearly what is expected of them. It provides them with clear objectives on which they can focus

The more prepared you are, the more the students will learn. If you fully understand your subject and can provide the students with quality instructional materials, they will successfully complete the goals and objectives of the class.

Hi Heather,
Good point about the need for preparation. I have been in the faculty work center and observed a number of my colleagues stressed out trying to get copies run two minutes before their class starts at the other end of the building. They loose all hope when the copy machine breaks down. They just fall to the floor and go into a fetal position.
It is not worth it. By planning we instructors can be in the classroom/lab and greet our students when they come in develop rapport with them. This sets the tone for a great class.

So that the student and instructor can have a good start and that the students can a clear understanding of what is expected of them during the course.

Students are very aware if an instructor comes to the classroom unprepared. As was stated in one of the writings, instructors will come across students that are very intelligent. If you have not done your planning well in advance and studied the course material you may find yourself in an awkward position.

If you do not plan early and completely, you may forget to teach an important point, you may teach all over the map which would make it hard for your students to follow along, and you would always have an air of disorganization about you. Plus, as the instructor, you would always be hurrying and stressed to get things done before class and that would spill over into the classroom and your students would feel it.

It is important so you have the knowledge and confidence to present with minimal nervousness.

disruptions undoubtedly happen and timeframes can be broken. Good planning allows you to call 'audibles' in order to accomplish the goals of the course

It is like with anything in life. planning first provides success down the road.

You have to be organized or the students will have no reapect for an unorganized instructor and they will not listen

When you plan in advance, you will always have the opportunity to review and improve. Ensuring that the objectives are covered on the lesson plan, as well as properly sequenced, is key on achieving the desired outcomes on any class.

It ensures that you as the instructor are directing the class rather than reacting to what pops up next in the textbook or what occurs in class. It allows you to shape the course as a whole so that you can lay out goals and objectives and ensure that they are met.
