The Learning Environment plays a huge role on the instructional process. I always try to get to the classroom at least a half an hour before class starts to get my materials ready to go. Always plan ahead of time to see if you may need supplemental resources, such as a projector, and make sure that they are ready to go before class as well.
In regards to room temperature, being in class early helps you identify this issue right away so that if you need to request to move to a different room, you can.
Hello Dr. Gary,
Students must feel comfortable with taking risks in the classroom as well as taking an active role in the learning process. I always tell my students, "there is not such thing as a stupid question" If I haven't explained something well enough to my class, I need t know so that I can clarify and re-teach the concept.
Students need to understand the importance of valuing and respecting the opinions of others. If someone is presenting an idea in front of the class, the rest of the class should listen appropriately. I always tell them, "how would you feel if it was you up there in front of the class? would you want people talking and being rude to you?"
Students also need to respect the rules outlined in the syllabus. For example, no cell phones in class because it disrupts the learning process. Be on time for class but if you're late, it negatively effects the flow of the class and the learning environment.
Mark
it effects student and even instructor as well as the delivery and quality of course content.
Schools MUST eliminate cell phone from the classrooms, Unless the instructor wants to text their teaching to the students :-)
the learninging environment plays a vital role in learning, if the envirnoment is unsafe they cant learn
it plays a very importatnt role as:
1. Increases the students' performance
2. Stimulates the positive learning attitude
3. Makes possible group activities
well i get destracted very easly and if there is something to descrate me i know it will destracte my learners
environment makes learning, conditions of the classroom / building along with seating arrangements will determine if a student is successful or nonsuccessful.
I do agree with you, students need to feel safe with you for several reasons, so that they can focus on learning and to be able to share feelings and thoughts about topics that are being discussed. I also feel that students need to be able to trust you enough to tell you things that may hinder their ability to learn. I have had several students that tend to confide things to our female instructors instead of me because they may think I might not understand. I think a lot of male instructors may have this problem, I tend to tell my students I don't want any drama in my classroom and I know that may keep them from wanting to confide in me.
when dealing with adult learners, I think it has a lot to do with how they react to learning, I tend to use bright colors in my room and I do my best to make sure that my room does not posess anything that might make them think of the outside influences that might keep them from learning such as posters that talk about class room behavior and neat inspirational sayings. I also keep some neat things in the class room such as Domokon and some other things to let the class know that this is a place for fun and learning
The learning environment sets the mood for effective and efficient learning. You want the student to perceive the environment as comfortable, secure, and friendly. It should be physically, mentally, and emotionally conducive to learning. You want an environment that is positive and supportive in order for the student to thrive. The room should be set up appropriately for the learning purpose with no distractions. Course materials should be ready and available. Any equipment should be checked ahead of time to be sure it is up and running properly. Prepare early and carefully and have a checklist of items needed for effective learning. This will save you from frustration and influence a productive and positive outcome for learning.
Your are absolutely correct. We have alot of older returning students that have several concerns such as home and work to contend with along with school work. Are we preparing them for the technology?
Cassandra,
Right you are and that is why it is so important to manage the classroom and student behavior to the point that the classroom/lab is a supportive and positive learning environment.
Gary
i agree the classroom enviornment is important, just one student can have an impact on the entire class if that one student disrupts the class enviornment. Its important to make sure all students respect the other students learning enviornment.
It plays a very important role, the students have to be comfortable or they are going to change their attention, the environment should be physical and emotional safe
Nadh,
In situations like this role playing and small group problem solving activities really work well. They really help to engage the students in the learning process.
Gary
GeO-Vanna,
This sounds like a good class opener. What are they writing about? Is it related to their lives, the course, their future?
Thanks for your input on this.
Gary
Clinical type subjects are learned well when they are practiced to ease the transition. I find it difficult without using models, partners, video demonstration. How else can one improve the learning environment?
I just have my student to journal for the first 15 minutes of class. That way they can empty their mind of troubles.
Unfortunatly, our classrooms seem to be either to hot or to cold. Our student have so much to learn. Most students are going to school and work. I would like to have more visuals around the room that the have to look at day in and say out. If they have to see that bone our that muscle everyday they will know inside and out just from reputition.
