ED 101
preparing any material early prior to the class starting and this needs to be done on a daily basis. Then if having a lesson plan completed early as well makes for better class management and the students will recognize that the instructor is organized and would follow the example the instructor is giving to the students.
Sandra,
As the learning leader of your students you are right about the need to stay organized. You are a role model for them so you need to demonstrate that you are in control of the flow of the content and activities.

I think it is important to stay organized as well. Students are going to pick up on your expectations. If you can't find your assignments or information to give to the class, why should they put in any effort? The phrase "you get out what you put in" seems appropriate.
Paul,
You make a very good point because as you mention instructors need to be prepared and ready to meet their classes but beyond that they need to be able to adapt quickly as situations arise or a new direction in the course is dictated by the learning pattern of students. This is when it is good to be an experienced educator so you can reach into your tool bag and pull out alternative instructional strategies to keep the course moving forward and meeting the objectives for that day.

I certainly agree with that.
I get to class early and make sure all my handouts are printed etc. before class.
Planning is paramount! I don't believe in busy work, but I want to use the class time to the best advantage of the students. I try to make sure an in-class exercise is done in the allotted time, but I have to have other things planned in case the students finish early or I discover they just don't 'get it' and I have to walk them through the assignment.
Paul,
Being organized sends a message to students that this is one of the expectations you have for them as well. You are leading by example and this helps to set the bar high when it comes to student projects and work.

This is very true. And once they recognize you are organized they find it easier to follow the lesson.
