coming early to class

took advice from the video, I find coming 15 min before class begins you can get a good pulse from the students, does anyone else have experience to share when they come early to class

Tasia,
The key to your arriving in class for me is what works for you and your students. I teach large classes of 70 or more students so by arriving early I can answer individual questions and interact with the students. For small classes with cohorts I think your approach is correct as they are already working together so I would continue as you are doing.

Gary Meers, Ed.D.

I usually do not arrive to class until about 5 minutes before classtime. Our classes are usually very small (less than 15 students) and the students progress as a cohort so they know each other very well. I find it awkward to be in the room as they gossip about school, friends and their personal lives. I feel I should grant them that time to privately vent, if needed. Any thoughts or advice on this experience?

Always get there early to 'mentally' prepare yourself for the class ahead. Also, one never knows what may have happened to either the classroom or supplies since the last time you were there. If you are there in plenty of time, you can handle any surprises that might be awaiting you.

I definitely agree! I made a mistake of arriving about 10 minutes late due to traffic. Even though the class was very understanding, it just doesn't set a great first impression or professionalism. Just like the video said, "you only have one chance to make a great first impression" and you want the class to respect you and take you seriously!!

I think that it is imparative that you arrive at least 15 minute prior to class and even earlier if it is the initial class. This conveys to students that timliness is important and really gives you some time to talk off line to the students.

Hi Christine,
Good for you. You are demonstrating professional modeling for your students. I know it may be awkward for you and it should be for the lead teacher because he/she is always late. But, often time such individuals never get it, about being on time and prepared and as a result never really enjoy being an instructor and having a good relationship with the students.

I come on time, but the teacher who heads the class is always late and mostly unknown. This is emphasized when I come early. We need to have posted who is in charge of clinic each session, the instructors in clinic, and our assignments at least 15 minutes early.

This is something I definitely need to work on, especially to ensure that all of the media resources are functional and working.

Hi David,
Great to hear. I know you are going to enjoying much success and establish a higher level of rapport with your students as a result of these efforts.
