Making a first good impression
First I am present in the classroom at least 20 minutes before class starts. I write the objectives for the day on the board. I make sure I have all my handouts in order to pass out.
Enthusiasm is a must! Since this is a nursing class, I highlight the body systems we will be concentrating on in the class. I review the syllabus, and discuss how the class points are broken down by tests, midterm, participation, attendance, projects and the final. I encourage questions.
Hi David,
What are some other ways you can impress upon your students how serious you are about their learning the content?
Thanks.
Gary
When you get to class earily students know you take your work seriously.
Great idea but I have a few issues with getting to class early. One, my class is usually the first on of the day and the classroom is locked and I don't have a key so I spend some time looking for someone to unlock the classroom for me and the students. Second, I occasionally work the graveyard shift the night before and get tied up late at work.
Betty,
I agree with getting to class early. I try to get in there 20-30 minumtes early to answer any questions and test all of the equiptment so I can gurantee an on-time start.
