Names

Any ideas on a quick and effective method of learning students names?

I FIND IF I AM ABLE TO LEARN MY STUDENTS NAMES BY THE 2ND OR 3RD CLASS AND FIND ALITLE ABOUT THEM PERSONALLY IT HELPS THEM TO BE MORE COMFORTABLE WITH WHAT WE ARE DOING IN CLASS.

After each student has introduced themselves, I ask each student to go around the class and identify each student they remember by name. This get each student to pay attention and mingle with each other.

Name tags maybe a good idea, but it does not help students to feel that the class is here "permanent" place for the next few weeks or months. I think we just need to try harder to memorize students' names, whatever it takes.

I typicaly find that after a week of class it is very easy to remember the students names. Especially when there are less than thirty students. Any more than that and I would have to use a seating chart.

Our program uses a get to know your classmates game. Each student writes now 2 truths about themselves and one false statement about themselves. Then each student introduces themselves and reads all three statements and everyone else guesses which statement is false.

Hi LeTisha,
Have each student introduce themselves and give two items of interest about their lives. Listen carefully and make notes during the introductions. This information will be enough to trigger your memory as you work with the students in future classes.

I too am not good at remembering names either. Our students wear name badges unfortunately they are not always visable. I generally make a copy of the attendance roster and when I do the meet and greet I try to write something that they said or a feature next to their name so I can remember better.

I find that I have a hard time remembering names as well. I get better with time but I have no method other then just trying to remember them. Anyone have any good associations that they do to remember names.

I always ask the student if they mind if I give them a nick name. If they are okay with it, I associate it with something they do or say all the time or maybe based on what type of hairstyle they have. Just remember to ask if it's okay if you call them it and make it cute or funny but not hurtful.

Depending on the type of class we are teaching we can always use the name tags or have the students make a name plate, and use some type of word association to remember the students name
