Hi Ann,
I think it is a good idea as well. This way you know how to support and encourage students as various issues arise with their attendance throughout the course.
Gary
Now with computer access alll students can eqasily track their progress and attendance
many of the students are there just topass the test and become noticeably irritated when class content doesn't serve the purposr of meeting the test expectatiopns how do i address their disinterest?
my school is very strict about attendance so I believe discussing consequences and having tem provide input to me regarding their choices and working hours to ensure they can meet the requirements before they start is a good idea
By making them in statement approach and by following up through checking the students understanding of these expections
I hand out a course syllabus, and we discuss the objectives of the course. We also spend time talking about SOP's, or standard operating procedures for the school as well.
Hi Betty,
The sharing of accurate comprehensive information about the course polices, requirements and assignments is critical just as you mention. This helps the students to get settled into the course and understand expectations.
Gary
I review my prospectus carefully and answer any or all questions students may have concerning the wording. I also provide all contact information so that students may contact me if a question or a problem arises
I place a rules list in each class
Hi Robb,
Good plan. With your method you are making clear course expectations, requirements and policies. This way you have reduced confusion to a minimum and given your students an overview of how the course is going to operate.
Gary
On the first day of class I carefully review all of the "Rules of Engagement" and the syllabus. In addition, I have a frank discussion about success and my expectations for students at our school.
Hi Angelique,
Way to go in providing multiple ways students can get course information as well as reminding the of assignments. This reinforcement should help to keep them moving forward as they acquire course content and meet the assignments in a timely manner.

Hello!
I like to begin each class with a short quiz on the reading. While they are taking the quiz I write on the board the reading for the next class meeting, as well as review questions to use as a guide for their reading. Everything that is due, or coming up, I put on the board, and highlight the key notes, and also post it on their online "black board" where they can access any information that they may have forgotten to write down or misplaced.
I've found that a detailed, page-by-page walkthrough of the syllabus really helps set the expectations.
Hi Kevin,
This is so true. What are some ways you have found to be effective in helping your students understand course requirements and assignments?
Thanks in advance for your input on this.
Gary
You have to be very clear and precise and make sure that everybody fully understands the expectations that is expected of them throught the class.
I hand out a syllabus for the "official" class criteria. I then hand out a paper that details test dates and chapters to be covered, another which details the projects assigned and the due dates, and a third that describes my own policies regarding makeup tests and missed work. I include my email address on each page so the students can contact me if they have questions regarding the content of the page.
I agree that handing out well organized outlines of the course will help put the students at ease. This will also help you to make expectations clear.
I have the expectations listed in multiple areas. I also have what is due that day listed on the front board. I also notice if one student is off then I will reiterate what I expect from that project.
Handing out a syllabus with specific dates and what is expected each course. A course outline to let the students know what they will be learning. Verbally telling the students what is expected.
