First Day

I would like some more ideas on breaking the ice on the first day of class.

Have the students introduce themselves then speak with and obtain the phone numbers of at least 5 other students.

Playing name games is fun. It gives students a chance to get to know one another.

Angela,
I think you and your students will like using this approach. This method helps the students to immediately build a connection with one other student and from there it is a launch point for getting to know the other students in the class.

I always have the students introduce themselves and explain why they chose the career but I like the idea of having another student to introduce the other student, so I think I will try this sometime.

Tracy,
I would start with introductions. Have the student introduce themselves and tell why they chose the career field they are preparing to enter. You can have them share a significant fact about themselves and this fact can be something small or major depending how they see the fact. Such as they just got married, had a baby, got a puppy, etc.. The fact does not need to be overly personal but just something that will start a conversation among the students. Another way to open this sharing up is to have them respond to the statement "If you really knew me, you would know that......."

You can use ice breakers as well where students pair up with another student and then introduce themselves. They chat for a few minutes and then you go around and have each student introduce the other one starting with their name and a little about them. This is a fun activity and helps each student to get to know at least one other student's name and something about that person. There are all types of ice breakers list on the internet that you can review and select for your class.
