A positive first impression sets the tone for the course and can motivate the students as to why they are there and the benefits they can expect to receive.

It builds trust, helps to create a comfortable environment and reduces fear of the unknown. It's difficult to learn from an adversary.

I try and assure my students that I'll do all I can to help them succeed and that our class/studio is a safe place to explore, experiment be original.

Nazanin,
Good point about how difficult it is to overcome a negative first impression. The key is as you mention to start with a good one and then build on it rather than trying to dig out of a negative hole. This is where planning and preparation comes into play.

The 1st impression is everything ... that is what determines if the students "like" or "dislike" an instructor, the entire course, and everything else that is yet to come. It is not very hard to leave with a positive impression but it takes an entire course-time to wipe out a bad impression (if at all possible). The instructor has to come across as someone who is very confident and is on top of all the course material and knows much more than is ever needed. But also needs to be sincere and be able to grab attention with enthusiasm and motivation.

William,
Your last sentence really sets the tone for the professional stance you are taking with your students. You are setting the bar high for them in all areas, one of which is dress so they know what kind of model they need to be in the field. This is the part of career preparation that I see missing in a lot of programs.

Its makes the students feel more comfortable. It sets a positive tone for attitudes and students are more prone to learn in this type of environment.

I am always looking good. I think it is imparative as a leader to set a positive roll model. Even when we are working is oil and grease. There is a loser way and the positive get as little on you way.

Change your clothes. This is the dress code of the day. At the end of training in and around the grease we change and return to looking good.

Being a leader is thinking ahead and planning ahead.

Michelle,
Very well put in terms of the value of making a positive first impression. The first class session has a lot to do with whether the students will come back and if they will see themselves as being part of the class you are teaching.

Jerod,
Right you are. It is a deep hole to dig out of and easy to avoid by preparing for and presenting a good first impression.

Eurico,
Good point and one we instructors need to remember each time we start a new class.

Any first impression can make or break a relationship. An instructor has a responsibility to the create a relationship with their student. That first impression could actual prevent someone from achieving their goals or dreams if they feel that the instructor may not be appropriate to help them. We cannot take back this first impression or alter it. We cannot try to justify to the student why we came across a certain way. We must be self aware and remember that when we walk into the classroom we must be genuine to ourselves, our profession and our students.

I think is is very important for many reasons. I feel the most important reason is so that the student feels comfortable with you as their instructor and the material.

Only get one first impression, if you come unprepared or late or looking unprofessional you will have to work twice as hard to gain students respect

Dennis,
Your last sentence reinforces the need for a positive first impression. The first day sets the tone for classes to come.

It is very important because it is the opener for both teacher and the students that makes getting the learning process is accessible and You did the first base in the beginning the learning process.

A student is most receptive and seemingly intuitive on the first day of class. If an instructor does not make a strong, positive, first impression, the student is very likely to instantly form a negative opinion of the instructor and the class in general. Respect must be established before learning can proceed.

Great point Ruben! It does set the tone and I like to add a bit of humor as well. I have an array of revelant cartoons that add to the subject matter that seems to engage the students more

Dr. Manuel,
A good point that needs to be reinforced with students as well. They need to remember this statement when they go out to interview for their first position.

Brandon,
You will do fine as a new instructor because you are concerned about things that matter, such as the first impression. By have a relaxed introduction session followed by a fun ice breaker you will be able to get a read on your students. Also, during these activities you will be able to settle in yourself and get control of your nerves. Then you will be ready to start setting the stage for the course to come with confidence.

Scott,
I like your introductory remarks. I am sure you got their attention with it. You are right about how making a positive first impression should be common sense but I am amazed at how many instructors show up unprepared, dressed poorly and late to class. Then they wonder why the students don't respect them.
