First day

The first day can be very exciting with meeting new people

I always start by asking students what they would like to learn from the course. I use their comments as a starting point to introduce the course objectives.

Richard,
I teach some gen ed courses as well and I follow your model since many of the students see no value in the gen ed courses. I have to work hard to make applications and find examples of how my course will help them in their career development.

I often ask students to identify one question they have about the course topic or one thing they would like to learn about. The idea is to get them to take some ownership over their own education. I teach general education courses, so I want to encourage students to have goals for themselves in the course and see how the course can be useful for them.

Tammy,
How do you open your first class meeting?
