A good course outline will help to keep you focused on the big picture and keep your teaching at an appropriate pace. It will do the same for students.

A good course outline will help also to keep on track. occasionally students will divert a class by accident and its easy to bring them back to the topic. if you have given them a copy and the class is off track you can ask "Can anyone relate what ______ is saying about his neck pain to the topic at hand?" which may be organ systems but when the room is quiet because obviously no one can.. that's when you can interject and get them back on course.
