Powerpoint
Sometimes i get better results by discussing the chapter, then using the powerpoint to reinforce the discussions.
In my experience, the discussion of the chapter and the actual demonstration on how to perform the tasks shown within the chapter seems to be a better approach than the use of a powerpoint presentation.
This is true for me too. I like to have the PowerPoint as an outline for the class time. I always have a slide in the beginning that show's what the class time will look like and one at the end that will help us summarize what we've learned before class time is over.
I don't add animations or a lot of text because it's just an outline. Sometimes, I'll add an image instead of text if it makes a good point.
Hi Eric,
Right you are. In developing your instructional plan you have to look for a positive comfortable environment, quality material, and engaging formats for presentations. As with any media you can overuse PPT presentations unless you break up the flow and have dynamic content and delivery on the slides. If you overload them with text and have too many the students will check out from the presentation.

There are a few chapters that contain PPT presentations that I just don't use. These can be overdone if used for an entire class.
Most of the time I asing a reading, before the power point
Hello Don-
Everybody seems to get excited with the PPt, however it is only and tool and the instructor still have to have the mastery of the subject matter and espertise in delivery. I agree and with your comment and just like you- I do not read theslide- They are merely triggers for furthet discussion, Thanks.,
What I do is similar except I will read the slides, then I will go into as much detail as I can without seeing the deer in the headlights look. Alot of our tests are based off our powerpoints so we need to use them more. We aren't alowwed to take away from it or change it BUT we can give information in addition to it.

I have the students read the powerpoint, and add my comments as well, and ask questions.
Hi Julie,
This is a common problem for any presenter. Facing the slides and reading from them is easier than facing an audience. One suggestion is to have the student presenters to have their fellow students complete worksheets as they work through the PP slides. Have the student presenter have the worksheet in his/her hand so they can face the audience and see if the fellow students are completing the worksheet from the slides as the presentation goes along. The student presenter will focus more on getting students to complete the worksheets rather than just reading the slides to their audience. Also, have the students print their PP slides on sheets of paper so they can follow the slides on the paper rather than on the screen. This way they only to glance
at the screen once in a while to make sure of what slide is being displayed rather than reach each one.
Good luck with this activity.

Don, I just use the power point to keep me on course, I don't read the slides.
I use powerpoint as an outline in all my lectures. If delivered in mini-presentations, with breaks to perform interactive group activities, it is a great form of lecture! It is fun to find different animation schemes and even better when students come up with new animations for their own presentations.
My biggest problem with teaching students how to do powerpoint is teaching them not to read the slides, but to face the audience as they speak!
i use the poerpoint as a guide of what i'm going to talk about. i don't like to read the powerpoint.
I agree. I also try not to make my presentations too lengthy as students seem so used to having Powerpoint presentations all the time now that they seem to tune it out too easily!
I do use powerpoint if the slides are put together well they can be a great way to increase student retention. But powerpoint presentations need to have great pictures and animation if they are going to hold the attention of most students. Im waiting for 3D powerpoint ---class now put your glasses on and examine the component floating above your head..
I utilize power point in medical courses, since it allows students to see disease-related pictures.
I notice that the students became really interested. in my classes
Don I often don't use the powerpoint other than as a review and a way to reinforce the subject material.
