Hi Michelle,
It sounds like you have a good balance to how your students can earn points for their efforts. Do you have a evaluation method for assessing their competency development?

I do it on a:
-if they were at class
-did they seem interested in the assignment or did they complain a lot
-were the results close to what I believe should have been right

I also feel if they really tried hard, but still did not completely understand the lab, I di give points for the effort put forth.

Hi Manara,
There are many different ways of grading new student lab grades. I am not sure I can answer the question with the information I have. If you could provide some additional information such as the nature of the lab, the work required and if the students are working alone or in groups I will be glad to give you some ideas.
