In-Class Assignments

I've been adapting a method of lecture and hands-on assignments in all my classes. Showing an example on the projection screen, then allowing the students to perform the same task in class not only keeps them focused but gives them a sense of accomplishment of the task.

I don't feel just talking about it effectively works, but let's do it together attitude shows the student they can do it as well.

David,

I agree with your method. I believe it also helps students recognize that their instructor is approachable and interested and their success.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Students retain things more when they're required to participate. Giving a variety of in-class assignments keeps them focused and at the bare minimum, keeps them awake!

Thank you for sharing this conceot ! It enriched my class a great deal !

I agree. It seems no matter what dominant learning style the student has, a demonstration, hands on, then assignment on the task they just completed works really well. It helps to solidify the ideas and facts presented in lecture, and can be supplemented with reading assignments.

Hi Bruce,
You have hit upon one of the most common problems with groups. Unequal evaluation and participation of team members. Equal evaluation and participation is not hard to achieve if the instructor is aware of group dynamics and works insure that everyone is a player on the team.

Open classroom teams can often allow students to hide behind the more vocal team members. It is important to verify the participation of all team members but also to set the environment for teams to utilize all of their team members.

In my production class of Advanced Garde Manger I introduce 31 different protiens which the students are allowed to pick from. The cooking techniques are introduced in simple explaination in the class introduction. Then by working with the 3 different protien categories I do individual demo's for each group. My class size to date is 7-12 students which may modify the demos

Hi David,
The team approach to learning is a good way to get everyone involved in the process of acquiring new knowledge and skills. Keep up the good work.
