Be straightforward in setting the stage the every time you start a class, that way everyone knows where everyone is in regards with the instructor's expectations.

I have a detailed Class Prospectus as well as an acknowledgement of the terms of the course that students sign as a contract.

We usually do group assignments and review work and quizzes.

That is a great suggestion and will clearly demonstrate if the expectations are understood. I am going to try this and have a feeling that it will be more effective than simply asking if there are any questions.

I simply ask them if they have any questions on any of the material that was covered. If they do, then I answer questions clearly and thoroughly.

making sure they are prepared for class

It is important that one make expectatins clear in the initial meeting with students.

BY BEING VERY SIMPLE IN MY EXPECTATIONS

I provide each student of a complete syllabus that outline/indicate the course details and requirements. Also, the floor is open for questions to clarify any information that may appear to be confusing or unclear to the students.

Hi Adelia,
Good way to give the students the foundation of the course and have them review the basics. The signing of the contract of agreement sets the stage for the next step in the learning process.

On the first day of class, Hand-outs with the class expectations. A review of the total handout. Students must sign that they understand and agree. I maintain and copy and provide each student with a signed copy.

I think making expectations clear starts with a good syllabus. The outline in the syllabus and a good lesson plan assist you in relaying your expectations clearly to your students.

Hi Helen,
Is this after you have covered polices and requirements of your course and given them a copy of the syllabus? Thanks for your follow up on this.
Gary

i always ask them,"Do you have any questions" at the end of the lecture. and follow up by saying speak now or forever hold your peace.

Hi Sandra,
Good way to reinforce the value you attach to your syllabus and what your expectations are for your students. This makes it clear what they are going to have to do to be successful in the course.

I use a lot of real-world examples when performing a lecture. Many of the examples I provide have been from my own experience. Doing so helps then to understand how to apply their knowledge once they get out on the job and begin their careers.

After thorough explanation of syllabus, I usually go over my own rules and regulation in the classroom and give them a written hand out.

Homework and discussion in class

I make assignment sheets weekly, here I list all material they will need, what assignments they will do and possible points, and due dates. I also list link site that may be helpful, and pages that are covered in the book. I have had many students that would like to see other instructors make these assignment sheet to help them make sure they are doing what is expected from them.

Hi Danielle,
These if explained carefully to the students can be excellent instructional supports. Because as you say they know where they are in relation to knowing or not knowing the content.
