Guillaume,
Good strategies to reach your students. Work on refining your different techniques and deliveries and you will do fine as an instructor. Keep the content relevant, show them application and bring your passion to the classroom and/or lab and you will have a great experience as a teacher.

this is a verry good tools, i have now an other perception of delivering a lecture
as a new chef instructor now , i was thinking about ; individual participation, always keep the atention of all students by asking some questions on what they understand, and what they don't, always give them some truth example from my owner experiance, now that what i see that from my point of view?
A good may to make lectures more effective for students is to keep them full of information that may not be in the book and keep them short, 15-20 minutes.
I try to be sure and maintain rapport with them throughout the lecture. Regularly asking how well they are following me, am I being clear, any questions, etc.
I like to bring different students up the the whiteboard to solve problems. That helps me follow their thought process in reaching a solution.
I use both overheads and you tube video demonstrations to help explain how a certain task is performed.
I do believe that from now on I will pay a little more heed to the 15 minute block of lecture being mixed with some other form of stimulating activity.
Veronika,
Good approach. You are providing a number of different learning opportunities for your students. This way they will be able to internalize the needed content throughout the class session.

When I am lecturing I am making eyes contact with my students and after explaining a subject I ask questions and the responses tells me if students understand my explanation and if they understand the subject. Also after verbal explanation I demonstrate it as well therefore I am making sure that my students leave my class with complete understanding of the subject matter.
Andrea,
I know you will like the results you achieve with this approach. Give it a try and see how it works for you and your students.

Mayra,
Generally after a couple of times through a course where you have learned how to focus on the critical content and get it across effectively. Then you will feel a lot more confident that you have provided the content needed to be successful in the field and have achieved the course objectives.

I think I can make my lectures more effective for students by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable pieces. If I give them to much information at once, they get overloaded. Maybe if I give them smaller topics and then perhaps take a few minutes to discuss the material, they will retain it easier.
As a newby, I use power point presentations, I ask questions, use videos, other activities and etc. However, there is so much I want to cover and I find that I don't have enough time to cover all. When does one gain the feeling that they have taught the course objectives effectively?
Michael,
This is great to hear! Keep up the good work. You and your students are going to enjoy the learning process even more through this increased involvement.

I have tended to make my lectures too long, up to 45 minutes! In just the last two days I have shortened the times into two 18-minute mini-lectures. The time in-between is used for questions from individuals and to catch-up with note taking. Just this small change has produced results; class participation has improved noticably in the later part of the class. I'll try to work in other refinements in the immediate future.
Some of the ways to make my lectures more effective is to keep it simple by breaking down complex topics, set the tone for the class before the class begin by being on time and prepared. You can watch the students body language and you my have to switch to a different teaching style to keep the interest. Finally, use multiple types of media to prevent the same "ole" routine eveyday.
Some ways to make your lecture more effective for students are the following:
-Use practical demonstration
- Provide visual aids
- Really paint the picture with your words and illustrations
-allow open dialog
Interactive lecture is my style. I make sure my students contribute during the class and not me talking all the whole time.
Being organized is something that I continue to struggle with. I think I've prepared and planned but inevitably one class gets rolling I lose my train of thought and forget where I was headed. I'm trying a few differnt techniques such as note cards rather than outlines. It seems to help.
Preparation, making the classes more interactive and providing them with thought provoking questions.
I teach computer classes. Before each class we have Headline News; topics or issues that happened during the week as it relates to computer technology.
I asked the students to tell me what they heard or found that week...participation grade.
