All students have a method of learning that works best for them or they prefer. It is up to the instuctor to incorporate as many as possible in each course to reach as many students and increase the chances of a successful outcome.

I agree that not only does varying instructional styles create a more engaging environment for students, it creates opportunities for students to learn from a number of different approaches so that they are not constantly trying to adapt to only one method that may be difficult for them to grasp. However, I disagree with the blanket statement that problem-based learning is more for advanced classes. I have seen it be very effective when used appropriately and more sparingly in beginning and mid-level courses to engage students' critical thinking processes. Given that all students learn at different rates, problem-based learning allows students at various levels an opportunity to be challenged and interact with one another in order to teach, learn, and discuss with one another relative to their point of view. This makes a great check for understanding in a group setting.

Students have many learning styles and it also helps to keep the interest of the students.

Michele,
Learners crave variety. They need a change of pace so they can keep their minds focused on the content while processing the new content they are being offered. This way they will stay engaged in the learning process.

I think it is important to change-it-up so to speak. I don't just lecture every class meeting, I do hands-on instruction, role-playing, power point presentations, video and film analysis, audio tapes, etc. in order to deliver course content. It helps keeps students engaged and lets them see that I am using the most up-to-date technology to teach them the content. They learn by listening, watching, and participating. They also don't get bored out of their skulls !!!

By varying your delivery method you are able to reach a wider base of students. You are more likely to keep the attention of the students and decrease possible boredom if not eliminate it altogether. It also helps to keep you as the instructor on track and be able to open up active participation in discussions with whole class involvement.

It is important to vary the instructioal delivery because individuals can only maintain their focus and concentration for 10-15 minutes. Therefore in order to keep you students alert and focused a good instructor must vary their delivery often. I personally teach 4 hour long classes and use a vareity of delivery methods in order to keep my students focused. Yes, we do take breaks throughoutht the four hours!

The most important reason is that students learn in a variety of ways. Personally, I love keeping my students engaged, and it is important to me to make class instruction interesting and stimulating. I teach a 4 hour class and although I use the same format weekly; each hour has different flavor to the format.

I think this helps my students know what to expect (continuity) but creativity within the structure.
