I teach culinary arts. So, hands on are a big facter in the learning process. Most of students learn the best through method of teaching. I try to use many if not all methods of teaching to accomadate my students different learning styles. Some of the classes I teach are lecture classes. In the kitchen classes I lecture, demonstrate, show videos or power points, have the students try it, work side by side, then evaluate personally with them. In the lecture classes I use alot of power point, group activities, and projects that come from real life applications.
I think that you'll totally right! Great observation and answer!
Hi Heidi,
It would be an interesting experiment to see if the students remembered more of the medications if they had a chance to hold a sample container vs looking at pictures. By the results you would know which method to use in the future. If you try this let me know which one works the best for your students.

Implementation strategies that I use include, team-based learning, small group dicussion such as think-pair-share, small group learning activities such has hands-on use of products, and ethical dilemma discussion. I work on a 10-15 basis of presentation of material follow-up by an appliable hands-on activity or discussion all of which with a focus on the VAK learning sytles.

I like to use a mix of lecture, group work, "current events" problem solving, and student presentations to accommodate different learning styles.
I include power point lectures with diagrams and illustrations, case study examples, hands-on demonstrations, and, for pharmacology class, either a sample product container or photographs of the medication or condition being discussed.
For some students, watching demos and handling products is very important. For others, tactile learning is not as critical.
In pharmacology I wish that I had a sample container for each medication for each student so they could take them home and hold the container to reinforce the memorization required. The closest I have come to this is giving students Blackboard access to power point photos of the various groups of medication .
By listening to them when they tell me about their experiences during introduction. And also vary styles trial for few days until you see a verty positive feed back.
I asssign resding materials prior to the day we will tackle the subject matter in class. I try to speak in a clear and understandable way and make sure that the students retain the information by asking open-ended questions. During demonstrations, I pause occasionally to let the students actually touch the product I am working on and ask questions again to make sure they are getting the information.
I have to give real life examples of when the student will use the material being taught. When doing so they pay more attention and retain the information.
Hi Jeff,
What strategies of instructional have you had the most success with your students? What do they like best when you bring real world comparisons into the class?
Gary
Hi Steve,
Good strategies for bringing the real world into the classroom. This gives your students some very practical and problem solving experience.
Gary
During class each day we incorporate a variety of methods that helps to accomodate many different learning preferences. We start with demonstration and lecture. Then each student reproduces what was prepared in demonstration.
One strategy is periodically reviewing students class evaluations and making thoughtful changes in the course content. Also by making real world comparisons in the learning and why it is valuable. We also use a variety of techniques (demo's, lectures, discussions, group activities to make sure we cover the wide variety of students.
For our design students taking the general education classes I teach, I try to make projects applicable to their programs.
For example, in my Psych class, a student can choose to create a project relating to the psychology used by a designer when choosing colors and typefaces for a printed announcement.
In my Film and Lit class, a fashion design major can create original costume designs for a movie, including explanations of the styles and fabrics they've chosen.
By using a variety of teaching methods. Lecturing, vocabulary handout, in class lab assignments, research topics that students present to the class. Hands on projects help many learners to retain more information than just listening to a lecture.
I attempt to present material in many different ways. Careful planning is always important, but, sometimes you have to go with what the class gives you.
I find it important to get to know my students and find out what their learning style or preference is... then I try to make sure I provide instructional materials in a variety of methods...
Hi Jacob,
What have you found to be your most effective lecture formats with your students?
Gary
I use different delivery modes throughout each class to incorporate the different learning styles the students may have.
I like to mix up the lecuture formats to meet the different learning styles of the students in the particular class.
