Hi Judith,
Good way to explore the different learning preferences for students. You are offering them many different opportunities to take in information and retain it. This is what good instruction is all about.

Hi Twykisha,
You last sentence really lays out the value of an exercise like this. The students can see you care about their success and they get a wider picture of their learning preferences. A win win for everyone.

Hi Rachel,
Good way to involve all students. By having them contribute to the course you can get a feel for where they are at and what their learning preferences are.
Gary

Hi Diana,
Visualization is a core element in instructional delivery. This way the students can graphically see what the effects are of procedures. This really helps the students to keep focused on the course content.

Hi Tammy,
Good point about the need for students to find themselves within their career field. There are some many different ways they can take a career and the instructor can be of a great help in helping them to make that meaningful and realistic choice.

In over 15 years of teaching experience I have found it best to try to accommodate all learner preferences. I ask students to take notes, I lecture and use videos, PowerPoint slides to cover course content. In teaching Business Communications (Speech) I have students do a demonstration speech on "How to" do something (Tie a Tie, Bake a Cake, Manicure nails). This involves the speaker and other students in the tactile experience. In career prep courses the students actually do exercises that discover their individual learning preferences, which is a help to instructors in planning lessons. I always ask for feedback from the students to determine if they understand the course content.

I like to access each students learning style. The students answer a series of question and then it determines their prefered learning style. They like this assessment as it gets them involved with their learning experience.

We stress the importance of this class and their future profession by getting guest speakers to come in and talk and going on class fieldtrips to see what they've learned in action. Both are very effective in solidifying what we've learned in the classroom.

Allow students to express their thoughts and as the teacher you can implements some of the resolution from the students point so view. Then add different learning styles to accomodate every one.RB

By lectuers and handouts, and then judging theri abilities to understand the course contents

i would like to use my skills and knowledge to implement best possible strategies for student learnings in the class room, with sometime real world examples/

In nursing most skills are completed the first time in simulation. The students then take this information and practice in clinical. We verify competency in skills lab and clinical area. They both have their place in nursing education. Relevant content is also influenced by student interest in topics. Our students are not interested in all topics. Not everyone is meant to be an ICU nurse or a peds nurse. Adults learn and absorb what they are interested in.

Visualization. I use many pictures in my power points and also use models (heart, etc>) for demonstration. I teach Medical Assistants.

Hi Rachelle,
This is a good way to approach providing different learning preferences. You are giving your students different learning opportunities throughout the course and these opportunities will enable them to have success if they will put forth the effort.
Gary

It is very difficult at times to ensure that all learning preferences are met while I am instructing. But, generally through proper planning prior to my lecture, I can ensure that all learning preferences are met.

I am trying to give them my personal examles from my experience, and also we used to do demontration , hands-on teachingprovides a good experience for easier understanding of material

Directly relate it to their future goals.

I try to hit on most of the learning styles so that i don't loose a student mentally. This way they all will have a great experiance in my class.

I try to see what others are doing and follow accreditation guidelines to meed requirements for the course.

Hi Timothy,
You are going a good job of mixing up your instructional delivery and then observing the success points as well as the areas that are not working as well. My suggestion would be to keep trying different methods in the courses, like torts that are still a challenge. I teach classes with multiple sections with large enrollments much like your classes and I am still working on different techniques that will work in classes of these sizes. By sharing this information among ourselves we will continue to learn how we can be more effective in large enrollment classes.
