Hi Heather,
This is the same format that I teach in. I follow the same general structure as do you because if you don't change the pace and offer variety the students will be lost. Also, since the class meets from 4 until 10 pm they are tired from work and ready to just collapse in their seats, which in my class is not an option.

I teach 4 to 6 hours classes. I always present a minimum of three lecture styles for every subject I teach. I do an open lecture that involves class discussion and has handouts to go with it, a group activity to reinforce and then a game to finish it off. This seems to keep the class engaged and makes time pass quickly.

Pause as intervals to ask the students a question or ask for their opinion on a senario or topic. Allowing time for discussion keeps students involved. Also visual aids/power point presentations help keep the material interesting and fresh.

Making Power points and disrtributing copies of them to students so that they can take notes of them

well prepared lectures before delivering in the class

Hi Karen,
I like the way you are engaging the students in the connecting of content with application. By having activities that helps the students to see relevancy to what they have just learned you are greatly increasing that knowledge retention level.

Hi Ian,
Good way to keep students engaged. These shorter lectures have a higher impact on the knowledge retention of students. The Q&A session then reinforces what they have just heard. This helps the students to move the content into their long term memories.

Hi Nick,
What are some of the strategies you will be using to implement the different learning styles into your courses? Thanks for your input on this.
Gary

One thing that I have done is to stop the powerpoint part of the lecture and give the class an opportunity to participiate interactively with me as we "put feet on" the information by doing a board activity - eg. together contributing to developing a nursing careplan for the person with a disorder on the topic for which I had used the powerpoints.

I try to keep the "lecture" part of my lectures to less than 20 minutes, and use open ended leading questions to engage them in conversation, and also to get them to talk to each other.

Being able to use all the different learning styles in your lecture would be effective.

Hi Sandy,
Good way to offer variety to your students. The change of pace helps to keep them engaged. Keep up the good work.

I like to give a lecture and then show a video to reinforce the information or go into the skills lab where we have materials that can be used to demonstrate the information that I have been lecturing on.

I have always avaoided power point presentations becuae I was afraid I'd get lazy and read the info on the slides until I had my students do oral presentations. I discovered having something to look at kept me interested longer becuse it gets to different laerning styles. I do like transparencies cause they are mostly pics and I can add what I want to say about each slide.

By showing the students examples in their fields of study would show them the relevancy of the course

I try to give practical applications to the lecture material. Sometimes students can't see how regulations can impact them. I always try to make the material relevant to the jobs they expect to have when they finish college.

In order to make my lectures more effective I can vary my delivery methods. By doing this I will be able to reach all types of learners and keep all engaged by using different teaching styles and lessons.

Effective lecture is one of the best way to retain the students.

As the module discussed, be interactive, use real-life stories, and connect with your students. Being a great storyteller and actor are great characteristics for keeping students engaged.

I like to get advise from other instructors.I have my students take a learning style survey on the first day so I can see what are the different learning styles in the class. At the end of the class we will have an open discussion on what we learned for the day.
