My lectures are designed to stimulate facilitation. I believe that unless students are engaged in the learning process it is only an exercise in futility on my part.
The opening may be a story or illustration and then I'll explain why the subject is need to know information. When the topic is sufficiently introduced I'll ask the students to share their thoughts and experiences in the area of our discussion. The best situation is when students talk and interact with each other. At that point the level of enthusiasm rises. If this happens I will contribute to the sharing, but I'm very careful not to dampen the dialogue by taking over the discussion.
Hi Mark,
Good step by step procedure to follow. This way you will approach the classroom ready to teach and with a high level of confidence. This is a win win for everyone.

Hi Kelly,
Great list. Thanks for sharing it with us. The key is variety and you are offering that with the list you shared with us.
Gary
Hi Renato,
Students like these kinds of application as you know. The more relevancy you can show the students the higher their motivation levels are going to be.

I do alot of hands on if I am lecturing an A & P class we will do alot of molds or coloring in class
Make sure you understand the material before you try to lecture.
Try to ask questions during the lecture to get the students thinking and voicing their opinion. I love to gives examples of what we are going over with a story I have dealt with about the subject.
Move around during the lecture. Make it FUN! Even if this is your 100th time teaching this subject make it as it was your first.
Put in the energy and enthusiasm. Remember this is the students "FIRST" time hearing the lecture.
Some ways to make lectures more effective include:
* mini-lectures
* demonstrations
* guest speakers
* field trips
I like to apply real world situations to the material being taught, this way students can see how it the subject applies to their training.
using different media, delivering the material then following up with a video demonstration. I also like to include a real-life situation to tie it altogether
By breaking the material down into sections, presenting the chunks of info and then inviting the students to respond with experiances that relate from their own life. I find that linking new information with pre-existing knowledge makes it easier for the students to recall and relate the fresh material.
Hi Carla,
Right you are. I can this "connecting the dots". You are helping the students to see application and relevancy when you bring in life experiences in relation to content being studied.
Gary
In order to keep my students interested and involved in my lectures, I use PowerPoint presentations as a visual aid. I often ask for the students to give an opinion on the subject and encourage students to challenge my statements.
It would also be extremely beneficial to apply your lecture to real life experiences. Many instructors have spent a tremendous amount time in the field and can use this experience to elaborate througout their lectures.
Hi John,
Good suggestions. Thanks for sharing them with us. Some additions strategies one can use are graphics, and case studies. Make a point and then reinforce it with an example through a case study. Students like hearing stories from the field so the more you can connect the content with examples the more powerful your lectures are going to be. Guest speakers really help lectures out as well.
Gary
I have students bring in news articles on current events and I ask them how the class material ties into the current events. The lecture becomes more of a two-way instructional method.
There are myriad ways to make a lecture engaging to the student. Here are a few of the things I like to use:
1. Move around during the lecture
2. Incoporate current event that relate to the subject matter
3. Relate the subject matter to previous material
4. Ask questions during the lecture
5. Assign students to present a portion of the lecture
What are some things you do to keep the student engaged during a lecture?
Be prepared, an outline of what is to be discussed.
It is important that one become effective in delivey of a lecture. some students can learn by being auditory. However, the information must be revelant
Hi George,
Good points all. Segmenting instruction is so important for learning. We take pills in small amounts and learning is much the same. Our brains can only take in so much at each learning session.
Gary
preparing and delivering effective lectures must be one of the most important goal of an instructor. Factors such as knowing your students, their backgrounds and the objectives of the class will help in the preparation. Knowing the materials used and the environment the lecture is given also contributes to effective delivery of the lecturs.
