By offering varied instructional deliveries, you meet many students' needs within your class. You keep the learners interested and motivated to learn since they don't always know what is coming up in the next class. If you "always" lecture, the students come to class bored. If you change your styles, students wonder "what are we going to do today?!" The latter is what I strive for.
I agree... a combination of short lecture or ppt presentations with hands on activites seem to work best with my students.
By offering varied instructional delivery, you can give opportunity for everyone to learn in there own preferred learning style.
To help reach all of your students
By varying your delivery methods, you allow for the participation and understanding of students of different learning variables.
Everyone learns in different ways and by varing your technique you can make sure to have the maximum impact with your teaching.
Adult learners attention spans are 15-20 minutes so they need a variety of delivery styles to keep their interest. I still predominately lecture, but I try to throw some role-playing into my lecture to break it up. There are some videos in the PowerPoints and I try to go over examples of their assignments. My goal is to incorporate more small group or partner activities this time I am teaching the course.
It is important to deliver a variety of methods because of the variety of students. Every student learns differently. And those students who may not learn the way the content is being delivered will be a disadvantage from the start. It is also important because you want to keep the students engaged as much as possible and by teaching content in different ways will hopefully accomplish this goal.
To reach all the different types of learners I use a wide range of different types of delivery...from videos, to music, to acting things out, in addition to the traditional lecture format.
All students cannot grasp the material the same way. There are different types of learners in the group.
It is best to ask the group of students a question that they can ponder for awhile specifically about what training they think they would need to enter the Court reporting field. It really shows what they actually know about the field.
Mark, I would agree with you totally. Have two son's with LD I understood that adult learners come in different packages too! Offering a variety of methods and techniques in the class room will allow me to reach a larger portion of my audience.
To keep students attention for one, another reason is that students have various learning styles and sticking to one typle of delivery may not meet the needs of all the students learning styles.
It's important to vary your delivery methods because students have different learning styles.
Not everyone learns at the same pace or in the same way. Using a variety of instructional delivery assists in reaching as many students as reasonably possible. In addition, utilizing more than one delivery style in combination yeilds a greater liklihood of retention and application.
It is important to keep things interesting and keep them entertained and focused. I love to use YouTube videos to accompany my lectures. I teach from a text book that students often complain about and so I find that the videos keep them more engaged and interested in the topic.
So many students learn and retain information i e visual auditory tactile to identify their approach to gather info we do each student a complete format

Hi Madonna,
Sounds like my students at times. 15 minutes can be a long time. I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I know what you are saying when you talk about after the dinner break. They are tired, full and ready to go to sleep. Have to be very creative to get them going again.

Hi Dana,
I am sure your life experience of coping with and overcoming the challenges of your learning disability helps you to encourage and support your students. You are providing support that is based upon real examples of how to succeed. Keep up the good work.
Gary
