You must keep the students engaged or they will lose interest and motivation to continue on.
Everyone learns differently, therefore it is important to change up or vary instructional delivery. Not only will this help all students to learn, but adds variety to the learning experience. Variety will keep the students (hopefully) more interested in what is being taught.
This is so true. Varying instructional delivery not only helps keep the students interested in the content, but it also helps keep things fun and motivational for the instructor. Both parties need to have some enthusiasm for what is being taught and what is being learned.
By offering varied instructional delivery, we have a better chance of reaching hitting the various ways in which students learn.
It is important to reach each individual in the class. As we all know, there are many different learning types; audio, visual, kinesthetic, etc. In order to teach each student effectively, an instructor needs to accomodate each of these varying types of learners; therefore, instructional delivery needs to address each of these types of learners.
It is important and necessary because students have different learning styles. One student might be an auditory learner in which case a lecture format would definitely works for her/him. Others learn by doing the task to develop the skills and expertise necessary to do the job.
I think it is important so that it allows for maximum opportunities to get the lesson across. Not everyone can learn the same way and sometimes lessons can become distant and the student looses interest - changing it up can wake them up.
People have different ways of learning. You need to vary your delivery so that you can appeal to everyone. All you students need to be able to get something out of your course.
Students (especially adults) differ in their ability to incorporate material content and tend to respond most favorably to a particular form of delivery. It is important, as an instructor, to vary the delivery methods so all students will have oppty to learn.
This is important to keep the energy up in the class, to keep the students coming back for me and to show the students that they can expect the unexpected. It will give students something to look forward to when it comes to attending class and make learning fun and dynamic.
It is important to vary your teaching styles not only to help teach students who learn different ly but to help keep them engaged. When I switch from a letcure to a demo or a demo to then hands on I find that students will perk up.
Hi Bradford,
Is there another way to get the content delivered. Is it possible to use guided notes or structured outlines so the students will be able to pick up the essential points? This way you may have some time to have discussion within the lecture time.
Gary
That is excellent advice Angela. I will be teaching a tax course. I think the method you described will work very well in that class!
It is important to vary instructional delivery because every student learns differently. One student may respond well to lectures, one to a combination of lectures and lab work, while another student may do best with hands on activities. Varying the instruction allows each student the opportunity to learn in the manner that works best for them.
I agree with all of the concepts presented in this module and I have enjoyed these modules. I have a question though. I teach one class in particular that involves lecture followed by a lab where the students draw. The lecture has covered as many as three chapters in a text book on manufacturing materials. These chapters are basically very dry and full of material, some in list form covering the subject. I am having a difficult time covering the material in a timely manner and still keep it interesting. Do you have a suggestion?
Different students learn by different methods. By varing techniques you can reach more students and keep class more interesting.
I try to mix things up in class sometimes and sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I think it's a great idea when it works and not such a good idea when it doesn't work.
I think it is very important to teach this way because the students in your classes are going to all learn in different ways.
Hi Michael,
This is a great quote that needs to be shared with all instructors. This is what keeps us coming back to the classroom day after day.
Gary
Here's a great quote that I heard, which answers this question:
The greatest teachers only ever reach 80% of their students on any given day; but the greatest teachers reach a different 80% every day.
