Martin,
Students like to hear how the content they are learning applies to their careers. By sharing your experiences you are increasing the value of what you are teaching for your students.

when we give the students applicable meterial for the course they show more initiative in learning.

After discussing concepts, I like to provide actual examples, that I have been involved in during my professional career. Often explaining that because human behavior is so complex, the application of the any one theory of causation will not always be applicable to every situation.

John,
Like the approach you are taking with your instructional planning and delivery. You are appealing to the different learning preferences of your students and as a result you will have a higher level of student engagement.

Some of the ways I have implemented relevant course content is by varying delivery methods. Such as short lectures, followed by group discussions of what was just delivered. Also a combination of written content, verbal lectures and hands-on exercises keep the class engaged and learning during the entire class period.

James,
I agree. The more you can "connect the dots" between course content and career application for students the higher degree of course retention and application will be there for your students. In addition their transition to employment will be easier because they see how they can make their education work for them.

One area I find relavant to course content to give the student the best result in support of their future career is putting in the content my eperiences in the field. I think this is very practical in helping them in their career goals.

Rana,
This is a good strategy to follow as it will keep students engaged throughout each class session.

Jacqueline,

I try and do multiple activities in the classroom so the student will not get bored. I use multiple visual presentations, I walk aroung the room, and I engaged the student with questions.

I try to incorporate various instruction styles so that I am maintaining the attention of my class.

Jeff,
Good strategy. This reinforces what has been taught and helps the students to move the content they have just covered into their working memories.

short videos! these work very well after the presentation. Many of the students are visual learners and seeing the mini vid presentation summarizes the topic.

Dynamic interaction with students and learning content.

Suzarie,

I incorporate into my lectures drawing, videos, quizzes, case studies, pictures to meet different learning styles.

Todd,
Sharing examples help to reinforce the value of the content being shared. This way the students will become more invested in the learning process.

yes pinpointing each individual's learning style will be difficult so I need to be aware of my teaching style to make sure I keep them engaged

just as my patients' have different methods of learning my ohc instruction, being aware of my students' learning techniques will help me be a more efficient instructor.
