Carol,
Immediate use of newly acquired knowledge is a powerful learning tool. Your approach provides such an opportunity as the student practice their skill development.

I feel that using real world examples and comparing them to the lecture or demonstration that is being given can enhance the students’ ability to learn effective methods and use then accordingly when the time comes.
I teach very practical subjects that the student has to demonstrate the ability to accomplish after being shown to them. I always demo what they will be doing, give them the page numbers for reference and then circle the room while they are practicing, so I can offer additional instruction, correction, or answer questions. Getting the student to accomplish the task after you have demonstrated it is key to them internalizing the process.
I agree with you, Nina. Making a connection between the content and its application in real world is very important. The students understand the concept better, if they can make a connection.
I like to use examples/personal stories of how the course content is related to their field of study. I believe that it lets the students know how and why the material being covered is important to their career field.
I like to use visuals and real life experiences.
Jacquie,
Good suggestion. The more variation we can provide in our delivery of instructional content the better. These methods help to keep the students engaged and focused throughout the course.

Dawn,
What have been some of your best teaching experiences?

I've learned instructional videos help and motivate students a lot. Over the years there have been many great youtube videos added by health care professionals that are really detailed and informative. This seems to take the repetitiveness out of lecture and excites me as well as the students. It is also a great way to stimulate critical thinking, by watching patient scenarios.
I do a combination, mini lecture but mostley it is hands on.
William,
Good point and one we need to remember as educators when we develop our lesson plans. Make sure we sequence the segments in a way that the students will be able to comprehend and use.

It helps in clarifing a complex step in a link that produces a particular outcome. The ability to focus a series into steps rather then continuely seeing a process as one whole consempt allows the complex to achieve clarity.
Christine,
You are on the right track with this approach. This way the different deliveries will touch upon the different learning preferences at different times throughout the course.

I find it very challenging to accomadate for all the learning preferences in the classroom. One of the ways I have approached teaching the different learning preferences is by alternating lecturing time with showing pictures, diagrams and providing clinical examples so that the students can follow and retain the key concepts being discussed.
Angela,
Good point about the value of using real world examples and stories. They help to reinforce the course content and bring value to what is being learned.

Melinda,
Sounds like you have a good start to your instructional development and planning. Keep your observational skills honed and you will be able to learn all kinds of new methods and strategies to use in your teaching. Be creative as well and you will be able to achieve a high level of teaching success.

Vladimir,
They really do. Examples help to reinforce the content being taught while showing relevancy and application to the students.

After watching students for a few classes, i am able to change some accommodations to better match some of the learning traits of my students. I will change to format of the tests and quizzes to lessen the amount of confusion of reading answers or move away from power point to logically explain a point of the lesson
Stories. I try to pull stories from my experience that will help illustrate a point. If I don't have a story of my own, I'm sure there is one that I have herd of from a friend or colleague that would do. I find that stories give an example of the point I am trying to make or makes the content relavent tot he students. Often, after sharing a story to illustrate a point, my students may offer a story of their own. This really brings it home for them.
