Daniel,
I agree about how students value and respond to stories. Stories help the content to come alive and they validate that there is application and relevancy to what they are being taught.

Julie,
All good strategies. Which of these do your students like to do the best or are they about equal in terms of appeal?

One of the strategies that I implement to help the students understand better is to use stories to get the point across. I feel that when you tell a story with the same message and outcome as the lecture it will better be obsorbed by the students and will also be remembered.

I try to provide as much info in several different ways without overwhelming the student

Real world experiences, so they understand not everything is a textbook case.

I use lecture, discussion, PowerPoints, writing, role-playing, and drawing. I often explain things twice, using different ways. I always ask if everyone understood the lesson/project. When I use vocabulary with which students may not be familiar, I define the word, often writing it on the board. I am a story teller, and, many of my students say, a pretty good stand up comedienne. I reference books, poetry, movies, television, and news. I write on the board in addition to using PowerPoints and use differnet colored markers.

I use flashcard for memory, play jeopardy, play bingo.

Mostly with lecture and hands on learning. I teach Medical Coding/Billing and in order to do this it all is hands on training.

Learner preferences are accommodated by offering assesments in multiple of ways. Perhaps offering a museum project or essay component depending on level of class , and assesment criterea for the class/program

I try to implement all aspects of learning in my classroom. I make sure to provide a good lecture where I write the notes on the board so the students can read and write the material. I typically follow lecture with hands on demonstration and a lab. This way the students can have hands on experience.

Problem solving, trial and error, mini lectures

Everytime I teach, I try to relate the subject to the students major and give them a choice on how to implement it. Each time the students are given examples and encouraged to brainstorm on how this relates to their desired career goals. Furthermore, for their research project, they are typically given choices on how to pursue their projects.

Good instructors provide clear course content, student expectations, and creates positive learning environments for students.

Great educators recognize learners are unique in their learning styles, and provides various methods of learning so all can understand, participate, and learn.

I RESEARCH ABOUT THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION IN THE FIELD THAT THEY WILL BE WORKING IN THE FUTURE.

I often add comments to further explain material in language that is simpler, if I think the directions will be difficult.

I have shown them a site that shows sample student writing and rubrics for how they are assessed.

I teach using various materials. While there book are open, I may use a powerpoint to correspond with the text. We play games for review, listen to audio, watch videos and of course read.

I try to mix up the class with different approaches. I review last class on a white board, then the current lecture is on a power point presentation, after a break, I have a demonstration where students can stand up and move around a bit and just observe.

Review materials, and give them a study guide

I utilize many different methods at one time. I use alot of show and tell, where the I pass items around and the student has the opportunity to not only look but touch and ask questions as I lecture on the item. I also go into detail on real life scenario's on how the item would be utilized.
