This can help me by designing appropriate activities for the classroom. Thus, I am able to be more inclusive in drawing the learners into the material.
If you are aware of the learning styles of your students, you can adjust your delivery method to match. This can make you more effective by allowing you to deliver the information to your students in a manner more likely to be processed and understood.
If you know the learning styles of your students ahead of time it can make it a lot easier to deliver the material in a format that they can understand better. You are more effective if you can deliver information in a style that the learner retains better. Personally, I like to present in different styles so that it hits all the different learning styles and reinforces the subject for everyone.
The instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of my students are mainly that it makes it easier for me to teach a subject, because my students are able to absorb the material better. Teaching to different learning styles also allows my students to better develop learning skills different from their own. This will help them when they join the workforce where they will come across different methods of teaching the job skills they need to know.
Knowing student learning styles helps the instructor modify format and delivery in order to maximize the learning opportunity for all students. Understanding the prefered learning styles of the students allows the instructor to customize delivery, facilitating a broader window of access.
I will do my best to identify the learning styles of my student faster.
Hi Marianna - Welcome to ED103! From what you describe you are doing an excellent job of teaching to the learning styles - best wishes for continued success in your teaching career!
Hi Rob - as you note, all learners enjoy some variety so this is why varying your delivery is always productive!
My goal is to help every student succeed in the course. If I know each student's preferred learning style I can tailor my delivery to help them learn as efficiently as possible. When they're successful, I'm successful and we're all using our time more effectively.
My challenge is keeping everybody involved with a PowerPoint lecture. It seems like engaging all learners in a demonstration or a hands-on activity is easier than getting the kinesthetic learners engaged in a PowerPoint presentation or a reading assignment.
It is extremely important, as everyone is different and has their own preferred method or learning.
When I was a student, it was important for me to see the the info in a Power Point presentation with pictures and graphs. I also enjoyed hands-on assignments. Later I found out I was a visual learner, which helped me select proper training courses and materials for my continuous education. I always think of that when preparing for a class. I know that some students are visual learners like me, and others prefer other methods. As an instructor, I need to explain the material while catering to all learning styles to make sure I don't leave anyone out. Sometimes I can tell right away how some of the students prefer to learn, in other cases, I ask them directly or in surveys that I pass around in order to learn more about learning styles and information presented. All of this helps me to reach more students and keep them interested throughout the course. I also encourage them to talk to me if they ever need help or have questions.

Hi Brad - Welcome to ED 103! You are exactly correct- teaching to the learning styles of your students will indeed get them excited about learning and ultimately get you great reviews!!!
you become in tune to your students presenting the information in way that they can process the information and retain it. By being aware of the students needs you can adjust your class to best suit the needs of the students by incorperating a muiltiple faceted learning experience.
The primary beneficiaries are the students, which is as it should be. If we know and incorporate their learning styles in our teaching we enhance their ability to learn. By incorporating different learning styles we create an environment where all learners are able to be accomodated through methods that respond to their individual needs. This will also make them more receptive to the course material, and more successful in their studies.
If you know the learning styles of your students you will be able to effectively have them learn the material in the course. Each student will feel that I'm presenting the course in a way that is customized to them. Also they seem to feel that I'm teaching more directly to them. (And I'll probably get better reviews at the end of the course!)
What are the instructional benefits of knowing the learning styles of your students? How can this knowledge be used to help you be a more effective instructor?
Knowing the learning styles of students enables us to be better instructors because we can prepare our delivery methods to meet the diverse needs of the students in the class. We should also consider the different methods used when we were students and incorporate those that we found most helpful i.e. learn by example.
This was a fantastic way to break down any barriers in the classroom. The most important thing as an instructor is to establish a comfort level so the students will not feel intimidated.
I know many students different but I know everyone like watch me in action. I do many demos. Lots of action. Keep everyone watching. No matter if everyone different learn style.
By understanding the different learning styles and implementing them in my daily subject delivery, all of my students will be engaged in the subject being taught.
Students are great at giving their opinions regarding delivery and teaching methods. And this is a good thing, because their feedback helps us to meet their needs. One thing that I have heard over the five years I've been teaching is that students want variety. They have shared that when other teachers rely on mostly one teaching method they lose interest in the class. It becomes predictable and less engaging. It is our responsibility as teachers to maintain student interest and by teaching with the various learning styles in mind, it is one way to accomplish this goal.
