Hi Janet - you are in every sense of the word a "teacher". Your students are lucky to have you!

I assess the learning styles about my kitchen students on the first day of class with lecture and demo, non graded quiz, and hands on skills test of knife skills to see what they have retained, or not..., from the classes prior to mine. I am fully engaged with them for the whole class and establish that immediate and direct and caring relationship from the moment we are introduced to each other. They know confidentiality exists from day 1 and that I truly care about their education. The next 6 weeks together we learn from each other and I see their growth in whatever way I can affect their learning abilities and they are all ages and levels of experience.

Absolutely I totally agree. To be successful in the classroom means to provide efficient ways of instruction for students to learn the subject matter. This might mean that we have to take extra time to help the students that did not understand a demo or a subject matter.

It can only help in terms of reaching your students "where they learn." As I teach online, too, it is curious to consider those students whose styles are more conducive to that environment for learning. (Outside of being extremely motivated to succeed, they would have to be the written word/auditory learners.)
Also, and I think this is huge, it might make me more tolerant of some behaviors in class. The doodler used to drive me crazy until someone (actually a student with ADD) told me that they "need to" do that in order to pay attention (it's often described as having "too much attention," not that you don't have enough, and you just need to do something to fill that up). So the doodler might be the kinesthetic learner trying to engage that part of their learning so that the auditory (class discussion) sticks better in their memory.

Everyone learns differently, so the styles are each uniquely different but can have similaraties. you have to treat each student as an individual learner and teach to every style to become successful as an instructor.

Hello,

Knowing the learning style of my students will help me to create lessons that maximize student learning.

Students benefit from knowing that there is more than one way to learn something.

In additon to providing the best possible learning environment for all your students, being aware and adapting your teaching to all learning styles keeps you fresh and effective so all students benefit from your class

it c an be used many differnt ways, uderstand your students and make it interesting to them so they can unrestand.this coarse trows out so many opening ideas,so many ways of teaching.

Hi Fortuna- Welcome to ED 103! Have you ever tried having your students play a scenario like asking for directions in the new language or ordering a meal? It can be a lot of fun plus teaches them some applied skills.

When teaching a second language, it is specially necessary to know the learning style of your students because you have the issue of clear communication at stake. Some students learn language better with the printed words, while others prefer to listen more than to read. I tend to vary my course delivery with listening comprehension exercises, reading selections and grammar drills, both oral and written.

The benefit of knowing the learning styles of my students is that I can recognize how they learn. It has also made me aware of what to look for to distinguish the different learning styles. This will make me an effective instructor because I will be able to tailor my lectures, assignments, and projects to each learning style. Therefore, helping all my students learn more effectively.

For myself,

I make it a priority to learn the different styles my students have in the process of learning. It is most beneficial when writing certain tests or quizzes as well as engaging them throughout lectures.

Knowing the learning styles of the students is very important, it helps us to provide a variety of teaching strategies so no student is left out.

Being cognizent of student needs, such as learning styles and abilities, will benefit all learners. Providing accessible learning enhances everyone. More opportunities for knowledge acquisition of content results in higher probabilities that content is mastered.

Because every student learns differently. Whether it's visually, audio or through the written word. The advantage is that you now have connected to each and every student in your class and they all will learn on the same level.

Hi Ruben-Welcome to ED 103! We all eventually encounter the student who just will not participate. Then we put on our "psychologist hats" - "Is the student learning disabled?", "Are there psychological problems?" etc. I find that the best tact is to try to create a personal relationship with the student to the point where he/she feels more comfortable. This may entail chatting with the student before or after class, emailing with a note about something you know the student has an interest in etc.

Being a design instructor means to be creative and technologically competent. As the majority of the class is lab based, the delivery is mainly interdisciplinary. There are lectures as well as demonstrations of certain techniques while which cover wirtten, audio, visual, tactile leaning. Identifying the styles of my students helps me to customize their learning needs, especially during lab activities.

Hi Michael - I supervise online education at my college and warn new online instructors to expect a LOT of postings by their students. As you mention it often turns out that the quietest in class students become the post participative online which I think is terrific!

I post a mandatory discussion board in the class portal page and make all students post to it based on the discussion from class... you would be amazed at how the quietest students open up online.

I understand that many of us have different learning styles or patterns. Which is very interesting to understand that students learn at a different pase and in different styles. It also allows me as an instructor to learn more from my students. I also try to be open-minded in order for my students to feel comfortable with the atmosphere to make learning more easy.
My question is how do you get the attention of a student that does not participate whatsoever?
