How do I overcome letting my primary learning style dictate how I instruct in the classroom?
Me too. It always nice to see when the light bulb goes off and the students "gets it!"
If we know the learning styles of our students, we can better incorporate those particular styles into our course. This benefits all of our students.
Understanding the learning styles of the studnet puts less stress on the instructor, the student, and other classmates. The students will retain information better making the lesson plan run more smoothly with out hiccups.
I was also going to ask if anyone had an assessment they have used. Thanks! I'd love to incorporate this at the beginning of my clinical course. Most of what I teach is through the visual and kinesthetic methods, but I also do mini lectures which appeal to auditory learners. I will try to add more written materials as well. I see how it will help me teach more effectively if I know the individual learning preferences of my students.
Hi Lynne, Thanks for your post to the forum. As you mention, the time we spend designing lessons that address all the learning styles, produces great results! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

The instructional benefits of knowing the learning style of our students are useful when creating and developing lesson plans. More than likely, each classroom has multiple learner types, therefore, it is wise to cater to each learning style within each plan. This would take much time and effort on the part of the teacher, however, it is time well spent. By directing the lesson to various learning types, each student would then benefit from the lesson.
Knowing the learning types in each classroom would be beneficial for the teacher because the development of the lesson plans should take this into consideration. Again, if we as teachers can develop lesson plans to teach multiple learning styles, we would inevitably have more success with the material we are trying to teach to the whole class.
The benefits of knowing the learning styles of your students is so we construct differentiated instruction to reach the students. By knowing the learning styles of your students, teachers can design, differentiate, and deliver instruction to best reach each individual student.
By identifying the learning styles of the students, I can prepare for class using all the proper materials needed. Visual, auditory and hands on.
Usually a student can tell you what way they seem to learn better.
Learning is an internal process of acquiring knowledge and useable skills that is not observable but experienced. Knowledge is best obtained through the use of multiple methods. Methods that reach each individual are necessary to ensure the information is delivered in the best way possible. Catering to the needs of all students ensures each individual has the best chance of being successful. The combination of visual, auditory and kinesthetic techniques combined with an educator who has a passion for their subject has provided me the best experience in gaining knowledge. Due to the powerful experience of a combination of methods, I believe it is in the best interest of students to not only find out what methods they best learn from, but to be presented curriculum in a multitude of ways to ensure that they have the best opportunity to gain new knowledge.
You can better your assessment of all context that you need to deliver to you students. This will help you plan your classroom content so that it will be better understood by all students.
The benefit of knowing your students learning styles is that you can tailor your class approach to their styles. This will include teaching through various methods during the same class period.
Hi Ed, Thanks for your post to the forum. I also find that students enjoy interacting and often can form a supportive community of learners in the classroom. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

The benefits of knowing the learning styles of the students is so that you have potentially reach each student wherein they can gain an understanding of the class contents received.
Hi Jarrod, Thanks for your post to the forum. That is the direct approach but I find that often students are not aware of learning styles. When we discuss however, they usually can identify more with one of the styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I find that when I present the information to facilitate different learning styles, more students learn and retain more. I also like to have the students help each other. Has anyone else had success with that tactic?
I will be able to help each students because I know the difference of the learning styles.
Hi Danita, Thanks for your post to the forum. I'm glad that you have found this course useful!

I simply ask the students on the first day what their learning style is. Due to the fact that I'm a Graphic Design Professor, Visual is usually the learning style of choice.
