Library users style of learning
Each student who comes into our library has their own way of learning information. It's important that librarians determine what method will help him/her find the information needed to complete the assignment. Will, a student need a couple one on one sessions, or a quick tour or how to get around the library. I have found that the best way to assist is to listen and ask questions - it's the best way of finding out what your students need.
Hi Carolyn- I visited Trinity University last year and toured the library including the exhibit that houses the Book of Kells and many other ancient texts. I said out loud "Oh my I love that old book smell!" at which the Irish docent
said " Oh that's me aftershave!". LOL! I think that most students want the most convenient method of retrieving info which is certainly via the internet. We give our students access to all the library databases but also arrange to send them any paper texts that they request.Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I enjoy the smell of a library - that musky old paper just brings back a lot of old memories especially with older libraries. I recently have been teaching at a community college and a couple online courses for another school and found many of my students prefer getting their research materials from an online library / Internet.
You spoke above regarding how important it is to determine what method will help the individual seeking information from the library. I feel with the ease with the online journals and other articles there is a shift paradigm in students retreiving research. Yes physical books / textbooks are great but many have moved into the PDF environment.
Have you had experience with an online environment? If so, how do you determine what method will assist this type of student seeking library information?
