Hi Connie - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are doinga great job of teaching to the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

knowing how to reach the student and deliver the content effectively can be a ardous task if you don't know the learning style of the student in question. Every student is different and teching effectively can become quite a task especially with a bigger class. Finding a happy medium to effectively educate is the best recourse.

You can gear your teaching style to benefit more of your students.

It helps me (as an instructor) to reinforce the methods of teaching in class, and how they pertain to a learning style. EXAMPLE: "Now for the visual learners let's take a look at this from another perspective." (At this point I would show something visual to reinforce what I had been lecturing on.) I like to reinforce the fact that "We learn differently" and, I will apply the necessary methods to make sure all students have a fair chance in understanding the material.

By modifying your teaching methods to students individual needs you ensure a better retention of informattion for the students.

It is good to learn the learning style of your students so the information that is presented to them can be effectively recieved by them all. You are there to help them learn and manipulating how you teach to cater to the class if important and allow each student a chance to learn. It also show you what area they are weak as well as what areas you can work on during your before class prep.

By delivering a varied learning style lesson to a varied learning audience one is able to reach a higher percentage of learners.

Knowing how a student learns will allow you to best reach and teach a student the skills they need. Most people have a main way of learning but also learn from other areas as well. If a student learns best by reading...a power point presentation and written papers describing a technique will help them learn quicker and retain the information as well. I feel I am a more effective instructor by trying to teach using all methods of instruction and that way I am reaching a student on many levels and reaching everyone. Making oneself available to students is always helpful as well, if they feel you are approachable they feel they can comfortably ask without an uneasy feel that inhibits learning.

Being new to the teaching profession, I have tried to find what has always worked best for me, what speakers did I learn from and why. Which speakers or instructors were not as effective. I try to mix up what my delivery style is in class, not just for the students benefit but mine as well. If the student knows i'm interested in the topic I am presenting, then they will be as well. I move from lecture, to powerpoint, to reading from the text and giving them hands on assignments. So far, I have received excellent feedback from my students.

Hi Vicki- Thanks for your post to the forum. Your idea of having students work occasionally in groups to get more comfortable with other learning styles is excellent! This prepares them for the workplace where they will need to adapt to other styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I would agree, knowing the learning styles of each student is important. It ensure each student is able to understand and comprehend the material. That's why I choose to use a variety of teacing styles and activities. Mixing up the students during group discussion also helps to expose everyone to different ways in which people learn. It's interesting to see the adult learners interact with those right out of high school.

Teachers need to implement what they know about learning styles in order for students to be successful.

Knowing and understanding the learning styles of my students is the best tool I have in planning my content delivery methods. Because they are diverse so must my methods be. My goal is to reach 100% of my students and this knowledge helps me to be the most effective instructor that I possibly can be. By zeroing in on each students learning style I attempt to create the best learning experience for each individual. I also have students work in groups so they can try to expand their own styles and broaden their horizons. It's all about the experience!

Good job! Keep it up! You and your students will both benefit in the long run.

Hi David - Thanks for your post to the forum. From your description, your class is very interactive and you are definitely teaching to all the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Knowing learning styles of students keeps them engaged in the material and allows for better understanding of the subject matter. Luckily, nutrition courses are perfect for hitting all styles of learning. Interesting facts sprinkled in the discussion and PowerPoint presentations help auditory and visual learners. Food models, and other props aid the tactile learners.

The benefits would being able to better reach all students. Using a variety of approaches better enables instructors to reach all students (Lecture, PowerPoints, discussion questions, case studies and quizzes offer several varied approaches.)

the class i teach is perfect for all learning styles. there is some lecture. power point and visual aids on the overhead. alot of lab time for actual hands on. most of the students seem to do really well.

Hi Diane - I agree, if our students feel comfortable with us they are much more relaxed in our classroom. This of course leads to better participation. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
