I am very in tune to my students learning styles. I know how I learn and how I don't. I want everyone to understand and be able to "get" the knowledge. This can make your students very successful if you are in tune to each of them.
the information can be understood by varies types of learners if the instructor uses varies metnods of delivery such power points for the isual , application as follow up of a concept dicussed for the sensory learner and etc.
Hi Robert- Thanks for your post to the forum. If we just make an effort to include diverse delivery as much as possible, we are doing a good job of teaching to the learning styles. Realistically we will not be able to do it in EVERY class but often enough. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
My situation is very similar to yours, Gretchen. We combine multiple learning techniques into the demo and lecture and it only makes the class more interesting and fun. We utilize the whiteboard, a map of the world, engage students in discussion by drawing on their personal experiences, and then they cook what was either demonstrated or described.
I think each class has a mixture of learning techniques. I have noticed they type of class typically has an average learning style. For example, in the Medical Assisting Program, there are a lot of hands on skills that need to be mastered in order to pass the class. Most of these students learn best by hands on teaching, rather than lecture or reading. I think in order to have the students benefit most from your teaching, it is best to size up the class early in the quarter.
You get to know the abilities and how each student learns each topic and at waht pace.
By knowings the learning styles of the students you can help each student learn to the best of their ability. The problem is one of logistics. If you have a large class, it is difficult to teach multilple ways during the same class.
its important to know how students learn, and if there are students that may have ADHD and they require different learning styles.
It is really easy to teach when you categorize your students by the learning styles they learn the best through. I personally learn the best with tactile or kinesiological learning. I found that when I drove someplace I remembered how to get there better than someone telling me directions or using a map.
Knowing how best your students learn will allow you to figure out how you will present your information and then it will allow them to get the most out of each classtime.
By knowing the learning styles of your students you can help them to understand the objectives of the topic you are presenting in the classroom. As an instructor, I am rewarded when students get good grades on their exams, or when they are able to take the information that I have given them and put it to practical use. I am working at a career college, so I want these students to be as ready for their career as possible when they graduate from their program. If I can target how they learn, they are going to be more prepared for work in their field. Also, I develop great relationships with my students, and many of them come back to see me and keep me updated on information. I love that! It is why I am doing what I am doing!

I think that it is very important to know the learning styles of each student because it helps the student to be successful in class. Also it makes teaching easier for the instructors because you’re not constantly guessing what style is most effective for each student. Most of my students are visual learners, I do a mixture of lecture along with hands on and students seem to understand the content a lot better.
By recognizing the learning styles of the student’s, instructors are better able to achieve student success.
Hi Jay - Ideally those questions would have been asked during the admissions process so that instructors can be prepared. But, often the disability only becomes apparent once the student is in our class. Then we need to be able to direct the student to remedial help if available.
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Delivering in the right format will assure success for the student as well as making the learning interesting. The student will be more receptive if they are grasping the material
Knowing the learning styles of your student will allow the instructor to deliver the topic better. If you deliver the material in many different learning styles it helps how long the lectures will go
Know question about it, knowing learnig styles will improve your objectives, but I also believe you need to ask if there are any learning disabilities your students may have and how to over come them.
Knowing the learning styles of your students, especially in higher education can effectively help you plan out the course and each class session. If the majority of your students are kinestic learners, the instructor should be incorporating frequent breaks, games, other items to keep the attention of the learners.

HI Gilbert- Thanks for your post to the forum. As you mention, often our eyes and ears can be the best diagnostic tools of all! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
As chef instructor it is very important that I pay attention to each student learning style. Hands-on like the first day working with a knife tell me a lot about that student who will need extra help.
