Knowing the learning style of the students can sometimes be a little difficult for the very quiet ones. I try to ask my class how do you as a person would like to learn? I get many answers like just give me a tool box and a car and I will take it apart he does not like the classroom at all. He does not relize he must also get instruction as well so I try to be uplifted and excited about the information delivered. I am trying my best to give all the students what they want,it is a challange.

Hi Angela- Thanks for your post to the forum. You're correct, if you make a concerted effort to teach to all the learning styles you will definitely find that you do not need to "re-teach" as often. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

IF you know their style that will learn better and you will not have to repeat everything. Covering all your bases is the first step i feel that will help me in my class. all styles are different and getting them used in class will help you, help the student

To know the learning style of your students is to strengthen the rate of instructional success in your classroom. Instructors must not be caught up in the "this is the way I learned it" syndrome and teach to the student and style(s) sitting right in front of them.

This knowledge can assist in instruction by increasing the receptivity of the students to the topic at hand.

In my class I find I have all types of learners.
I try to teach in a way that all types receive the information.
First the classroom lesson with pass around training aids.
Second the tactile part of the lesson.
Third the review and test.

Ok...I'll try that...thank you!

HI Wardell- As probably the most un-creative person ever, this is a challenging question! The best suggestion I can come up with is to ask those students if they can come up with works/pieces done in different mediums that can then be adapted to the digital mode.Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Annette- This is often a problem. I usually say "How about having someone who has not aswered yet?" Best wishes- Susan

you create your lesson plans in a more adaptable way and in ways that students will repond to more positively and with more interest

Hi Geneveva- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, absolutely, you will find much better learning and also that you will be invigorated by keeping your teaching fresh! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I find it helps to know your student's learning styles. Sometimes that can be a bit of a challenge but taking the time to do so can help students grasp the material at hand. I have also found that by using more than one style when teaching I cater to more students who may be having difficulties.

I fully agree. Knowing their styles allows the instructor to work the classroom and increase student involvement.

I have the same set up in my classroon - 50% lecture. I have had a couple first responders take over the discussions. How do you shift the discussion to the quiet students?

I teach Graphic Design. What kind of course content can I use for kinesthetic learners?

HI James- You are running an active learning classroom - great work! Best wishes- Susan

HI Dale - Thanks for your post to the forum. Good luck with the Learning styles Assessment-I know you will find that being aware of how your students learn best will make you a better teacher! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Most of my students are "hands on". There is about 50% lecture. I'll get them involved by throwing questions out to them prior to the P.P.slides. I'll question them on the next slide about to come up and watch for the response. I'll work with the quiet ones and bring the "first responders" into the discussion.

I'm very excited about giving this test to my new students next week. I am teaching Safety and Sanitation and had less than great success last block. I need to figure out how to reach more students.

Rather than just randomly using tools for all four styles of learning, I try to estimate the distribution of students that are in the class. One way is to take note of their major and/or career track that they share during introductions. Another way is to "experiment" with the different ways of conveying the content in the first two classes, and eliciting feedback from each tool's effectiveness.

This method would not qualify as "scientific," but I think it helps me to determine which styles may be more predominate the students in that class, and adjust accordingly...
