It is important for me as an instructor to know my students' learning styles so that I can maximize my classroom instruction and gear it towards specific learners at specific times!
I have to admit I'm a bit saddened by this study. I think that it has been more directed towards how I learn and what is easiest for me. I'm going to change how I teach from here on out. Thanks for the insight I really needed it
It enables an instructor to cater his or her lessons to more students by using more modalities. Instructors should always plan on teaching using multiple modalities. Not only because of the different learning styles that are more than likely present in the classroom, but because it will help the instructor stay fresh and not exceed student attention spans by staying with one idea or one method of academic delivery for too long during any given class period.
Well of course if I tailor my delivery to the students' needs I will be more effective. But I will also be very exhausted!
I spend a lot of time on each week's lesson. And I think I manage the visual and auditory with the lectures and visuals. And then I ask for them to be hands-on to show me they have learned something in the exercises I give.
But each lesson taught for each style sounds unrealistic. Do people actually do this?
In a few classes I have students take a learning styles assessment and in others, I just observe. Respecting students' learning styles and offering delivery and assignments that aliow for different styles leads to succcess for many students that don't do as well in other educational settings (especially large auditorium lecture halls). There is one I've used with good success but it does not match the four main ones we discussed in Module One and most other times learning styles come up. It has four dimensions and students are placed on a continuum for each of the four depending on how they answer a set of questions. Here is the link to it:

I am also looking forward to trying theone mentioned by the instructor of this class. Sarah Foslien
Using this knowledege helps me to develope a more diverse learning enviroment in the class room. i.e. Video, illustrations, lecture and sound.
Hi Matt- Thanks for your post to the forum. You have the right idea - mix up your delivery styles and your are better able to reach all your students learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
When I can understand the different learning styles of my students, I can use it as a tool to review, create, and all around push myself as an instructor to a new level of sharing information.
It also helps me to develop assessment styles that will be fair to all students in my classes.
This helps you to know the different ways to present the information because each student learns in a different way.
Knowing the learning styles of your students as well as yourself help you to deliver the most infromation in the time allowed. Knowing the learning styles of your students will help you as an instructor as you will be able to use severaly learning styles in helping your students learn the most information in what learning styles is the best for them. The students will learn more infromation if you use all of the styles availabel as tehy will be learning in the mose comfortable style for them.
The learning styles of my students varies so greatly fortunately we all have somethings in common by emphasizing those i can bring everyones focus and reach most of my students .
i find it very helpful to know the learning styles of my students. it makes me modify my lectures to try and include each of the 4 types of learning styles into my class, so i can try and reach all.
By Knowing how your students learn best, it will help them retain information. If you can find out their learning style fast, you can deliver the information to them via the best avenue, which makes you a better teacher.
When you know the learning styles of your students, you can design the class to address each style and thereby, enhance learning. This can easily be accomplished in a residential classroom while online instructors often times must teach the class as designed. The course designer is responsible for including all learning styles in the delivery of the course material in an online format.
Hi Sue - Sorry that did not go over so well. You may be right the tactile could have been over-ruled. We don't absoulutely need to address each style in every lesson - just so we engage each learner on a regular basis. Best wishes- Susan
HI George- Thanks for your post to the forum. I had never heard about NLP - thanks for sharing, I plan to explore it this week-end! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
It is obvious that students learn in different ways. We process information differently. I was fortunate to learn about this through the master of it all--John Grinder, who wrote "Frogs Into Princes" an exceptional book about hypnosis. Grinder modeled the late Milton Erickson, MD who was the pioneer of hypnosis. Essentially, many of the communications methods used in Ericksonian hypnosis rely on the meta model that includes the 5 senses. Although we are capable to use the 5 senses, most rely on one, or at least a process that begins with one main sense and then establish an understanding of the real world. The NLP model developed by Grinder & Bandler used this understanding to creat a methodology, or model of excellence in communication. The end result seems to be the ability to acquire what you want to acquire. In this instance, it is the abiltiy to educate, or teach...

By knowing the learning styles of my students, I can arrange my teaching sessions accordingly to keep the students interested and help them retain the new information they are receiving. This knowledge makes me more effective as an instructor because the students are actually learning and retaining the information and I won't have to backtrack to keep students up to speed.
I had an interesting reaction when I tried to incorporate all the learning styles in one evening, I was going to have them read it, write it, see it on a movie and then do it. I was really excited to apply these concepts. The class had a problem with it and didn't want to do it (create a heart and put in their own words how it works). Flexible as I am I changed the lesson plan and we went back to the worksheets. I certainly mis-read that. or maybe it was the the visual/auditory learners that were the loudest and the tactile learners kept quiet
