Hi Charles - Thanks for your post to the forum! I agree completely - the best plan is to begin by addressing all the learning styles. Best wishes! Susan
Always learn the learning styles of each student in class. It will also help keep your students interested in learning more.
Since it is difficult to know the learning style of each student at the beginning of a course I think it is important to develop a lesson plan that addresses all learning syles. As you get to know your class you may begin to favor certain methods that best suit the group.
It is important to remember that students not only learn at different paces but they also retain information differently as well. By offering multiple methods of instruction we will have a better chance of reaching the majority of our students. For example, we can integrate various multi-media into the classroom to help the visual and auditory learner.
I think it is important to know the learning style of your students so you can be effective in delivering the course info to access progress.
Hi Lawrence- Welcome to ED 103! You are exactly right - it is always good practice to try to address all the learning styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
Of course you want to reach students who have specific learning modalities, but teaching to different learning styles benefits all students. It provides a richer sensory environment and is just good teaching practice.
HI James - Terrific - glad that you liked it! Susan
HI James - I think that we have had a lot of discussion about lecture which normally appeals to the Auditory learner. For the most part the posts have addressed ways to break up lecture to include delivery that also addresses the other styles. Thanks for your post! Susan
I believe that is important to know the learning syles of my students. That way, I can plan my lectures and demonstrations more effectively so as to help the students get a better understanding of the material that I am presenting. I can then concentrate on those learning styles that the students use and arrange my couse using those particular styles.
By knowing your students learning skills you will they their learning ability so you can present your lectures in their understandings.

Knowing the learning styles of your students helps an instructor prepare and deliver the course material in a way that the students can retain the information. As a culinary instructor it is importnat that I fully demonstrated some things to certain students and with others I can just give them a recipe and they will ask questions when they have them. By varying my styles with different students I am ensuring that everyone is learning.
Hello Susan,
This is a very interesting topic. As I stated in a previous post, an important aspect of knowing a student's learning style is to strengthen their ability to learn in their nondominate style.
I feel that the discussion boards addresses all of the learning styles except audio. Do you agree or disagree?
Jim
Susan,
Thank you very much for this link. I just went to it and took the test. Very quick, easy and informative. I can not wait to use it in my next course.

It is also important to know which styles the student needs to strengthen. This will help the instructor the nondominant learning styles that the student will face in the work place.
As new students come into my Drafting classroom I begin with hand drafting. This beginning is safe for the new student to exercise their learning through a number of methods: they listen to the instruction, they watch a demonstration, and they then are able to draw from these and textbook examples of the work they are doing as they start
their engineering drawing experience.
Hi Brad - Welcome to ED 103! Teaching to the learning styles is challenging but really pays off for the students and instructors find that they enjoy the variety and opportunity to be innovatine. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

The benefits of knowing what your students learning styles are, help in many ways, firstly it helps you assess the best way to present information to your students, in a form that they all learn best with. Obviously there are going to be a mixture of learning styles in one class , so the best way to reach all students is to present all the information in different forms.
It helps me become more effective as an instructor by ensuring that I reach all the students equally , with the lesson and information I am teaching. It allows me to ensure that no student is left behind and they are all learning at the same pace in the learning style they prefer,
By knowing the learning style of your students you can gear your delievery of the material to the most effective way it will be recieved and retained
