Student Participation

Getting students involved is just as important as presenting them with new material.

That is great Claudia. I do the same thing, only I ask the following class, "what we learned so far in class?" I give everyone an opportunity to respond and praise the correct and partial correct answers.

Hi Thomas, Thanks for your post to the forum. By sharing your experience, you demonstrate the relevance of what your students are learning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I like to present things that I have done out in the field that relates to what we are going over to help them understand and explain how what we are going over helps in the field.

I usually will relate what is being discussed in class with a real life scenario. This helps them to understand the concept and critical thinking.

Hi Bevin, Thanks for sharing some great questioning techniques! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

It's a good point to ask students what they learned at the end of class. Personally I try to get students to build on the questions of others. I initially ask a question then when a student answers, I ask if anyone can add to that or disagree. I try to keep this going and have the students cross pollinate ideas. I can tell it's going well when they bounce ideas around and add to a question between themselves then redirect a better question to me than I had originally asked. It keeps everyone on their toes, engaged, and learning.

I always ask at the end of the clinic ,
What did you learn today ?, the information of their experiences in the huddle inform the other students about personal experiences and show them that everybody is in the same boat and may have the same question at some time. It works this is a topic to start a discussion

Indeed. Once students are interested in the topic or bring in their own ideas and thoughts will help facilitate their own learning process with regards to the content. They can take the learning beyond the classroom setting.
