Its a great way for the student to self-evaluate hisor her attention, comprehension, and mastery of the subject. If the students realize that the teacher gives them multiple CAT's, they will tend to pay better attention for fear they will be unable to answer the CAT correctly.

These are the fun assessments. By asking questions relating to the topic after the topic has been or is being covered, it keeps the students involved with the education process as well as lets them know they may be called upon to answer a relevant question, so they must pay attention.

Great idea I will use this will be great for order of steps. When you write ,you can not have divided thoughts.

I often allow the students to give feedback to each other - through project critiques - I allow the students to give input and then I give my critique based upon the assignment criterion - this allows each student to hear what others have to say about their projects - and gives them an idea what it will be like when clients review their projects in their careers.

Hi Jaclyn - Students really like some daily class routines. As you mention, it encourages them to prepare for class as they know what is expected. best wishes- Susan

Hi Christopher - If the student can "teach back" they have certainly learned the process. Excellent! Best wishes - Susan

I like to do the Minute paper when I feel that the class is drifting off. I will give them a question on the topic that I was discussing to get them make on track.

If I am doing a demonstration of a product that the students have made in a previous class. I will have them instruct me on what steps to take to make the product as if I have never made it before. This allows them to demostrate that the have learned the concept well enough to be able to walk someone else through the process.

You can incorporate these techniques by beginning the day with asking the students what they learned the day before to lead into the new days lesson. Then after that lesson, end the day with questions on what the learned that day. If you continue that on a daily basis the students are constantly remembering key points of the days and opinions on how the days lesson went. You can use because tyhey know they are going to be called upon at teh beginning or end of the class so they are always looking to have the best learned concept. You could use this as feedback also if they need to pay atttention more, or take more notes.

Hi Susan

I have students turn in minute papers or add to the back of the standard quizzes. We discuss this right after the quiz is collected so its still fresh. Our learning blocks are only three weeks long, so this enables me to determine where and who I need to focus attention on.

Hi Dr. Chuo- Assessments are meant not only to give instructors evidence of learning, but as you mention , to be able to give students specific feedback to facilitate improvement. Thanks for your post and best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I do this every day through student production in the classroom where I can see what they are putting into practice based on what we have gone over.

Assessment techniques are valuable to allow students to see how they are doing. It is important to give students regular feedback and provide them specifics on their performance. By doing so, they know what areas of improvement are necessary. Dr. Shirley Chuo

Hi Michael - Asking those questions also helps your students to see the relevance of what they are about to learn from the start of your class. Great work! Best wishes - Susan

Useing CATs helps change direction in the class room to bring about a more dynamic atmoshpere to the students during the learning process.

One of the CAT techniques we use is a Needs Assessment. At the beginning of a class or a unit, we ask the students to tell us what they already know about the topic, what they hope to learn, and how they plan on using that information in thehospitality industry. This not only helps to reinforce the importance of the content, but it allows our faculty to respond to our students' needs and previous knowledge as they reevaluate the curriculum.

Hi Carlos- Welcome to ED 103! The debriefing after they have finished at their cooking station is a great technique. They can discuss what went well and not so well and brainstorm ideas to make the next time better. Excellent! Best wishes for continued succes in your teaching career. Susan

I do a variation of the minute paper where I ask each student what technique aided them on their cooking station as well as what they can stream line in order to improve: saute, grill, hot apps, expediter, and garde manger. This motivates and educates the whole team while aiding in cross training for their next station.

make the classroom confortable first, than when asking questions give them time to answer,as well as giving them praise when they answer it correct.
