It helps the student reflect the content at the most personal and therefore relvant level.

Allowing the students to honestly note things that they would like to further educate themselves on and the instructor can use these items in their teaching.

I believe a student realize where they are in life when it comes to self assessments it really makes them aware and also a goal where that want to be in life

Hi Kim, Yes, because students are identifying their OWN areas of weakness, they often take a more active role in their progress. Susan

A self-assessment is a non-threatening way for students to see where they need improvement. By identifying their areas of weakness they can then take the needed steps for improvement. Things such as study groups, tutoring, changing their study habits can all improve their academic standing.

The Questions on the self assessment should be worded in a way to really make a student analyze themselves. Most yes and no Questions will not work for these assessments. You really have make the student think about themselves.

It allows the student to really think about what they could do differently to improve their grade.

It lets the student know how far they have come, it can help them be aware that this is the path that they have chosen. It makes them realize can I be better or do I stay at this level.

Hi Jon, Thanks for your post to the forum. Excellent that you give that one-on-one feedback! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I have my students assess themselves in our lab setting. Afterwards we sit down one on one and discuss the positives and negatives of the lab, and areas for improvement.

Hi Cindy, Thanks for your post to the forum. Here is a link to an article about student self assessment that I found helpful.

Hi Vivian, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree - when students self evaluate it basically puts them in the "driver's seat". They can see whether they are doing well, or not, and decide what they want to do about it, or not. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I like this idea. I usually use more testing procedures than self assessment. How do you go about this? Just ask them what they think or have them write it down? I could use some ideas on this. Thanks

Self evaluation tool will not only help the student have a realistic goal focus but will give him/her a feeling of ownership and active participation in goal/learning development which is important to student growth.

Thank you Susan. To assess a student before providing access to information is not a good teaching value.

Hi Curtis, Thanks for your post to the forum. You point out the main goal of student self assessment - "They can proactively commit time and study towards more targeted efforts to improve in the areas of weakness" . Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

It can point out their strengths and weaknesses in regards to specific skills and competencies. They can then proactively commit time and study towards more targeted efforts to improve in the areas of weakness.

Hi Shannon, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, students really benefit from assessing their own progress in a un-graded format. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I think allows students to find areas of strengths and weaknesses. By using self-assessments, you are not comparing yourself to others and their progress. I have used different assessment tools for my students such as what type of learner they are and what type of study skills they have. Once I am familiar with my class, I start to see how each student learns and I aim to teach in a manner that covers most of the different ways.
