Using CATs as sources of instructor and student feedback

Classroom assessment techniques (CATs) are important sources of feedback for both instructors and students. How can you incorporate these techniques into your teaching and how can you use them to give feedback to your students?

One thing that I've done is that at the very start of most of my classes, I will have a pre-test that we all go through together as a group. I feel that this gives me a good idea of where my students stand on the topic and that it also teaches the students what to expect in the future.

Hi Tamara- Thanks for your post to the forum. Tes, that sort of frequest feedback serves as a reality check for students and as a guide for instructors. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

We use feedback forms that are given to the preceptors in the OR. This lets the students know where they stand. If the are progressing at a pace that they should be at. It also helps the teachers know what they should concentrate more on in the classroom.

I think assessing students in the lab environment is great. It allows the students to apply and show me what he/she has learned.

Hi Syed - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, it is so important to provide whatever assistance is needed to help students succeed. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Cynthia- Thanks for your post to the forum. Your use of CATs is excellent! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

They can be used to see if you need to alter your teaching or how well the student is retaining the information.

I usually use CAT's in the clinical lab. This allows me to remind the students of what they learned in lecture and allows me to remind them about techniques or way of using instruments. Students greatly appreciate this.

the student who are little weak in the class room do not embrace them in the class, give them private tutor and help them so they can become successful and always praise all the students specially the weak students, take them to field trip give them topics realeted to their subject

By doing a demostration and have the student demo it back exactly the way it was taught. Then ask them for their opinion about it.

CAT's are a good way to provide information on students progress and also bridges teaching and testing. I find minute papers to be very effective along with lab work.

I always try to incorporate real life situations in my lectures. It makes the information easier for the student to comprehend.

I usually use a short test of the new subject to teach at the beginning of the class. At the end of class I give my students another short test, possibly with the same questions and / or some additional ones. Thus I realize if I covered the issue and how they learned the subject. This technique has given me excellent result for me.

I use CATs in the laboratory environment when they are applying their knowledge to what they have learned in lecture.

Hi Ziaul- I'm glad that you found a useful idea from this class! Best wishes- Susan

CATs has given me a new guide to my evaluation process.

Hi Kelly - I'm glad that you like the punctuated lecture idea. I know when I first started teaching I would go on and on without checking for understanding. We really need to stop often and make sure everyone is still with us. Susan

I really like the idea of punctuated lectures, which I plan to implement in my next class. Students need time to reflect on what they are learning.

Yes, this is a great tool. I had professors who where great at this. I use the same tools in my class. This is great so they can get the key points of the lecture.
